King Charles's reign proved quite profitable. According to the 2024 Sunday Times Rich List , the British monarch is currently ranked 258th among the richest people in the UK, with an estimated net worth of $770 million.
Charles' wealth reportedly increased by $12 million in one year. It also far surpasses his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was worth an estimated $468 million just months before her death in September 2022.
The reigning monarch's fortune took a hit in 1996 after he reached a divorce settlement with the late Princess Diana, which reportedly cost him $21 million.
"After [the capital] was wiped out, he became cautious about hiding some money from the principality," a former royal aide told The Sunday Times . "We're not talking huge sums of money here - tens of millions, that's all. That’s it. Some people think Camilla invested a lot of money into their relationship, but that’s really not true.”
Charles' income rebounded with profits from the private royal estate the Duchy of Cornwall, which "provides an annual income of £21 million, which the prince uses to support himself, his children and their families."
king's royal assets
Charles also owns a number of royal assets, including properties such as Highgrove Estate in Gloucestershire, Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, the latter of which is reportedly worth more than $360 million.
The British monarch also profits from taxpayer-funded sovereign grants. Established in 2012, the grant is provided by the British government to the royal family to fund official duties and maintain royal residences such as Buckingham Palace
"The Sovereign Grant is funded by a percentage of profits from the income from Crown estates (originally set at 15%)," the royal family website explains. “The Royal Trustees (the Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Head of the Privy Council) will review the grant every five years.”
Prince William's deep pockets
Prince William, the heir to the throne, is also reported to be making a fortune. CelebrityNetWorth estimates the Prince of Wales's net worth at $100 million, while the Daily Express says William's net worth could exceed $1 billion after taking over the Duchy of Cornwall from his father.
