Director Nancy Meyers reveals how she 'cast' Lindsay Lohan in 'The Holiday' .
Meyers, who also directed Disney's 1998 remake of The Parent Trap , opened up about the film's casting process back in 2006, revealing that she didn't give Lohan much of a choice.
"I've known Lindsay since I directed The Parent Trap and I told her she owed me everything, so I let her do it," Meyers joked in a 2006 interview with ComingSoon.net.
"I called her and said, 'You have to do this for me,' but she was sweet about it, she was totally there," Meyers added.
Lohan makes a brief cameo in Vacation , and Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz) sits down to watch the trailer for Deception, a fictional action film starring Lohan and James Franco.
More to come over the holidays
Like Lohan, Meyers also managed to get Franco on board — which was easier than expected given his existing relationship with Lohan.
"I know him a little bit," Meyers told ComingSoon.net. "I asked him if he would do it, and it turned out Lindsay and James knew each other, which was really fun."
Meanwhile, The Office star John Krasinski and WandaVision's Kathryn Hahn also guest star in the Christmas classic as Amanda's co-workers.
Dustin Hoffman also appears briefly in the film, playing himself in a DVD rental store where Alice Simpkins (Kate Winslet) and Miles Dumont (Jack Black) are Talking about his Oscar-winning film The Graduate .
A holiday sequel?
The 2006 film Vacation, written and directed by Meyers and starring Diaz, Winslet, Black and Jude Law, tells the story of two women who swap houses during the holidays, one of whom (Alice) from London and the other (Amanda) is from Los Angeles. To escape the heartbreak of returning home.
The film was a box office hit, grossing over $205 million worldwide and becoming a Christmas hit in the years following its release.
Despite reports that Holiday 2 was in the works, director Meyers shot down any speculation in December 2022, writing on Instagram: "Lots of DMs talking about this - sorry but it's not true of."
