Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan's sex scene 'joke' was actually serious

Nicola Coughlan has a new show coming — and no, it’s not Bridgerton Season 3 yet. Her British comedy Big Mood premieres on March 28, so she's been working hard to promote it. Luckily, many of her interviewers also took the opportunity to gain access to Bridgerton intel, and thanks to their efforts, she revealed the lengths she went to making a "PG version" of her mother.

Bridgerton (mom version)

In February, Coughlan told Ireland's Today FM she had hatched a plan to remove her mum from Colin, played by her character Penelope Featheringle and Luke Newton. Saved from the Bridgerton sex scenes starring Bridgerton. "I requested the PG version for my mom because I wouldn't do it," she said. However, some people apparently didn't realize how serious she was. When the host of SiriusXM Hits 1 recently asked her about it, she clarified that the comment was not a joke.

"It was literally written into my contract. People thought I was joking," Coughlan told Variety . "I just don't want to... We're Irish Catholic. That's not our vibe."

She shared that her mom was surprised when she first watched Bridgerton and saw Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton) naked about two minutes into the episode back. "She asked, 'What is this?'" Coughlan recalled. Luckily, her mom adapted and "now she thinks it's awesome and really fun," she added.

Season 3, Behind the Scenes

Although Coughlan felt her sexy scenes in "Bridgerton" season 3 were inappropriate for her mother, she had a positive experience filming them. She spoke to British talk show This Morning about how her relationship with Newton helped improve the awkward situation. "Thankfully, I've known Luke for four years and he's a super nice guy," she said, before adding. "We can laugh about it and, you know, it's very liberating and it's very fun."

The result, according to Coughlan, was that the Bridgeton chapter "won the disrespectful battle." Newton seemed to agree, telling attendees at a fan event in February that "everything is buzzing," Variety reported. He further teased: "A lot of people are doing this. It's not just us!"

When the first part of Bridgerton Season 3 hits Netflix on May 16, it sounds like a lot of stars will need to cut the PG cut.
