This article explains how to set up Discord parental controls.
Discord offers limited parental controls in the form of Family Center, an opt-in tool that parents can use to keep tabs on their children's Discord activity. Family Center provides parents with an activity dashboard they can access through their Discord account, as well as a weekly email summary of activity.
To set up Discord parental controls, you need to have your own Discord account and have access to your child's Discord account. You can't set up Family Center without your child giving you access to their account. You can access their account using your phone, the Discord desktop app, or the web app, but you'll need to have the Discord app installed on your phone as the process requires you to scan a QR code.
Here’s how to set up Discord parental controls:
Using your child's Discord account, navigate to User Settings (gear icon).
Choose Family Center .
Click Connect with Parents .
Click to display the QR code .
Please do not let others see this QR code.
In the Discord app on your phone, tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines).
Click the user icon in the lower right corner.
Click on Family Center .
Click to connect with a teen .
Point your phone's camera at the QR code to scan.
Click Send connection request .
Click Close .
On your child's account, click My Family .
In the "Incoming Parent Requests" section, click the checkmark .
Click to accept the request .
Using the Discord app on your phone, tap the Menu icon > User icon > Family Center to view your child's Discord activity.
Discord doesn't let you view or monitor your child's direct messages or voice calls in Discord, but there is a setting that automatically scans for and removes explicit content. This setting isn't available through Family Center, so you'll need access to your child's Discord account to turn it on, and they can turn it off at any time.
Here's how to set up secure direct messaging on your child's Discord:
Using your child's Discord account, navigate to User Settings (gear icon).
On the mobile app, tap the menu icon > Profile icon .
Choose privacy and security .
Choose to filter all direct messages .
When your child joins a Discord channel, other members can also send your child messages. You can adjust the settings in the Privacy & Safety section to prevent strangers from sending messages to your child.
If a stranger gets your child's Discord ID, they can still send your child a friend request to initiate a direct message. Your child can deny any such friend request to prevent receiving messages.
Here's how to prevent strangers from messaging your children:
Using your child's Discord account, navigate to User Settings (gear icon).
On the mobile app, tap the menu icon > Profile icon .
Choose privacy and security .
Scroll down to "Server Privacy Defaults" and click the "Enable message requests from server members you may not know" toggle to turn it off.
Click the "Allow direct messages from server members " switch to turn it off for extra protection.
Discord parental controls are somewhat limited. Family Center for Discord allows you to monitor some Discord activity, such as how many servers your children have joined, how many direct messages they have sent, and how many voice calls they have participated in. But you can't view their messages, location restrictions, blocked users, or anything else.
Discord doesn't even let you open Family Center without access to your child's Discord account, and there's no way to prevent your child from turning off any privacy protections you've set up on their account. If you want to gain more insight into your child's activities, you'll need to use a third-party parental control app.
