Now you can share your Proton files however you want, and they remain end-to-end encrypted.
Sharing files online means your data can be compromised, or at least until Proton Drive makes some sharing improvements.
In a press release sent to Lifewire, Proton, the Swiss company that created the secure email program Proton Mail, announced improvements to Proton Drive. Proton Drive is a free cloud storage option that includes strong encryption. Proton Drive now has more secure and flexible sharing options.
The most important of these new options is the ability to decide whether you want to share files and folders publicly with a link that can be shared with anyone, or privately by sharing the file to an email address. If you choose to share publicly, anyone with the link can access your file, while sharing to an email address limits sharing to only those with access to that email address.
You can now also choose to grant permissions to the people you share files with, just like with Google Drive. When you choose to share something, you can set people or groups as viewers or editors. Viewers can only see files you share, while editors can make changes. However, you can revoke access from anyone who shares your document, whether they are viewers or editors.
Of course, this is Proton, so your files always remain fully encrypted. This means end-to-end encryption that Proton says uses "modern elliptic curve and OpenPGP standards," which prevents Proton from even seeing the contents of your documents (or emails, or passwords, whether you're on a Windows or Mac computer).
"Proton is unable to decrypt your files, even if required by the government, ensuring your data remains completely secure and private. This feature gives users complete control over their data, combining familiar collaboration tools with uncompromising security Combining security and privacy. With this new update Proton Drive expands beyond public link sharing, enabling users to create shared file spaces to collaborate easily and securely," the company wrote in a press release.
