If you work with remote team members, you're probably familiar with Slack as a collaboration tool. But did you know that Slack also has a powerful built-in task reminder system? Slack reminders are a great way to remember things like work tasks, personal appointments, or birthdays. Here's how it works.
The correct syntax for adding reminders in slack is simple. The command consists of three parts, and when added, Slack will remind you or others with the reminder text you specify at the time you specify.
To see how you need to set up the command, log into Slack and enter /remind in the comment field. A popup will show you how to build the command.
Always precede the person's name with the @ symbol, or the channel name with the # symbol. If you remind yourself, use me without the @ symbol. Follow the /remind command to specify the person for whom you want to set a reminder, the reminder, and the reminder date. like this:
/remind me “remind” April 29, 2020 9:15 PM
You can use a variety of formats to define time. Specify only today's time, date in most formats, or write out any day of the week. You can also use recurring terms, such as "every Monday and Friday" or "every weekday." If you do not specify a time, it defaults to 9:00 AM on the date you specify.
When you press Enter , you'll see a message confirming that Slack will remind you at the date and time you specified. You'll also see buttons to delete reminders or view reminders that have been set .
Reminders appear in Slackbot channels. When a reminder is active, you'll see a notification icon appear there. If you select a channel, you'll see the latest alerts. You can select Mark as Complete , Delete to delete the reminder, or Snooze Reminder to receive reminder notifications again later.
If you use the @ symbol to assign a reminder to someone else, the reminder will appear in their Slackbot channel on the date and time you specify. Using Slack to remind others of tasks is a great way to stay productive in the collaboration tool your team uses.
Editing or updating a reminder requires a few extra steps because you can't edit the reminder directly. First, you need to find the reminder you want to edit, delete it, and then recreate it with updates.
Recall your reminder list. To do this, select your own Slack channel (select your name) and enter /remind list . This will display a list of all reminders you currently have set up.
Select Delete next to the task you want to delete.
Use the process above to add the reminder again and add new details.
Whether you're using Slack on the web or the Slack mobile app, the /remind command works the same way.
If you receive a message in Slack and want to respond later, you can save it as a reminder. Whether you're using Slack on the web or the Slack mobile app, the way you do this is slightly different.
In the Slack web app, select the three dots to the right of the message. This will bring up a menu where you can select "Remind Me." Then, select the time you want to be reminded on the left. You can choose a fixed time period or choose Custom to set the date and time and customize the reminder itself.
To add a reminder from a message on the Slack app, long press the message and select Remind me from the pop-up menu.
In the "Remind me" window, click the time you want to be reminded. Select Custom to set your own date, time, or custom reminder text.
These reminders will appear in the Slackbot channel just like any other reminder you set for yourself using the /remind command.
