It's that time of year again: Google is gearing up for I/O, the company's annual software event. Like Apple's WWDC, Google I/O is actually a developer conference rather than a traditional product launch. But while app developers can focus on their own specialized activities, the rest of us are actually following consumer-facing software news. For Google I/O, that means a lot of artificial intelligence.
Google I/O and artificial intelligence
Google has been pushing its artificial intelligence services for some time. Gemini, once known as Bard, is now available almost everywhere at Google: There's now a paid version of the service, like ChatGPT Plus, and the technology now powers many Google AI features on Android, Workspace, Maps, and more.
Artificial intelligence is the current trend in technology, and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Google is expected to continue discussions as it explores its vision of artificial intelligence across its product lineup, particularly in search. (Search, of course, remains the company's bread and butter.)
Of course, being I/O, Google will likely use the event as an opportunity to showcase Android 15, which is currently in beta. Perhaps the company will expand on features we already know about, such as granular control over the number of notifications an app can send, a high-quality webcam mode, and partial screen sharing. It's also possible that we'll see some new features that haven't been tested in beta yet, as well as other new features across Google's lineup.
While the company may release hardware, the focus is really on software. That said, the company will undoubtedly have its eye on its recently announced Pixel 8a.
How to watch Google I/O 2024
Even if you're not one of the reporters and developers invited to I/O in person, you can tune in from anywhere. Google will broadcast the event live on its official website as well as on the company's YouTube channel. The main event kicks off on Tuesday, May 14th at 10am PT (1pm ET).
