How to make your Halloween costume warmer

While some places allow for modest Halloween costumes, other climates can bring snow showers and freezing winds that will leave you wondering how to make your Halloween costume a little warmer. If you fall into the latter camp, have no fear. You can still dress up and celebrate without freezing.

If you know Halloween will be cold (because it does every year in your area), you can plan ahead and choose a costume with multiple layers and a few pieces you can add when the weather gets colder. (Period costumes, mascot costumes, and dresses are often warm-weather options.) But if a cold front surprises you before you make your debut in an outfit that's not too big or too warm, there are a few last-minute things you can do to stay comfortable. It doesn't have to make your outfit crowded or bulky and annoying!

When in doubt, wear a layer of base layer underneath your costume. Swap your bare legs for sweater tights, your open-toed shoes for neutral boots, and your updo for a puffer jacket or hat. Gloves, leggings and socks are also great options when you're out of ideas - or a sweater!

If you're still shivering, here are some easy last-minute ideas to warm up your Halloween costume.

1. Wear woolen tights

Luxurious cashmere-blend sweater tights, $58, HUE

No matter what outfit you're wearing, you can keep yourself warm by wearing a neutral base layer, like these tights. If you think it will detract from your appearance, choose nude leggings.

2. Choose an outfit with a jacket

Women's Grease T-Birds Jacket, $50, Halloween costume

If it gets really cold under your hood every Halloween, plan ahead and pick out a costume that will keep you covered. Football players in letterman jackets, pink ladies gone bad—the options are endless.

3. Choose clothing with high boots

Women's Militia Boots, $70, Halloween costume

Witches, gogo dancers, policewomen, Rosie the Riveter - they all need heavy-duty boots to get the job done. If you’re looking forward to snow on Halloween night, this is a great option!

4. Choose clothing from an era

Masquerade Queen Costume, $60, Yandy

Hoop skirts and petticoats are very comfortable to wear. Wear stockings or sweater tights underneath for extra warmth.

5. Wear long gloves

Skeleton Costume Gloves, $7, Costume Craze

Long gloves are perfect if you plan on trick-or-treating or going to a bar on a cold Halloween night. You can wear plain black clothes or patterned ones like this and make them part of your outfit.

6. Wear stockings

HUE Flat Knee Socks, $8, Hue

If you're cosplaying as Winifred Sanderson or an equally creepy character, these green socks are perfect. Just invest in a pair of socks with the right fabric or a wide hem, like these HUE socks, to make sure you keep them in shape.

7. Play as "Hotline Bling" Drake

"Hotline Bling" is hot right now, and the video features a funky dance like Drake wearing a sweater that will keep you warm all night long. Here's our guide to dressing up as a Drake song.
