Anyone who loves pop music and understands fashion will agree that Lady Gaga's music videos are sartorial gold. Gaga has a keen eye for style and art, and it shows in her work. Her videos, which feature many famous designers and some never-before-seen non-traditional accessories, never cease to amaze me. Waiting for another movie to come out, and watching every premiere and all the costumes, highlighted some of the most exciting moments of my teenage life.
In high school, I was pretty sure I was one of Gaga's biggest fans. She wasn't just my celebrity crush, she was the love of my life. I'm obsessed with her: her music, her personal style, her tattoos, but most of all her attitude. The unapologetic and honest way she discussed sex and her attraction to women made me feel a strong empathy for her. I also feel like I can relate closely to other “little monsters” through the internet and participate in conversations about bullying, queerness, and individuality. Through her music, activism, and her fan base, I have become more comfortable with my sexuality and sexuality. For all the queer kids, all the “weird kids,” all the kids obsessed with art and fashion, Gaga is truly a light at the end of the tunnel: I’m all of the above.
Her music gave me the courage to come out and the courage to get tattoos and other body modifications I wanted. The first time I dyed my hair was to the sound of "Hair" from the Born This Way album. I listened to "Bad Kids" and "Born This Way" when I felt misunderstood at home and at school. Gaga's praise of New York City, singing that it's "more than just a tan you'll never lose," helped me overcome medical obstacles and anxiety to realize my dream of becoming a writer living in the city. Celebrating my sixteenth birthday on her Monster Ball tour was probably one of the greatest days of my life. I cried when she talked about being fearless and being proud of her queerness. I will never forget the impact she had on me and how she helped me through some of the toughest years of my life.
These days, she seems less of an advocate for queer youth and spends more time singing with Tony Bennett and hanging out with her fiancée. But her videos, and the stunning outfits she wears in them, remain popular. I love watching her old videos and reminiscing about her insanely great wardrobe and beauty choices. I've seen these at least 100 times, so bear with me as I recall all of the best, most iconic looks from her videos over the years. I promise I will try to keep my obsession to a minimum.
1. Disco Bra Heaven
With the release of her single "Just Dance," Gaga became a newcomer to the music industry . She had cute platinum gold fringe, cool pink plaid nails, and the bra to end all bras. I still stop in my tracks whenever I see a bra like this in a store. What I wanted more than anything was to show up to a New Year's Eve party wearing suspenders and a disco bra. one day...
2.Hair bow
My sister and I have been obsessed with her hair bows for a long time. We thought we could make one out of our own hair, but that resulted in a lot of painful knots and painful disappointment. Ended up purchasing a smaller version to match our light brown hair. But alas, we've never found one that's big and nice in our price range. Moreover, her eyelashes are so thick and dense that I want to go out and buy millions of false eyelashes!
3. Paparazzi Minnie Mouse
This Minnie Mouse inspired jumpsuit is perfect. Yes , I said jumpsuit. This is where my obsession with jumpsuits and rompers begins. I just love the plastic crazy shoulders, and the shaping of the dark lip. so cute! Well, you can act cute while you poison your boyfriend.
4. Walk around fashion baby
Just looking at this GIF makes me scream . This look is head to toe Alexander McQueen and I'm having a heart attack . McQueen is my favorite designer of all time and I have Gaga to thank for introducing me to his work.
I saw this costume up close at an exhibition of McQueen's work at the Met a few years ago. This all-over sparkling masterpiece was so perfect that I couldn't take my eyes off it. Don’t get me started on shoes. My Tumblr was dedicated to posting photos of these shoes in various colors for a while. They look like a bitch , but they're exactly the kind of radical fashion statement McQueen has crafted throughout his career.
5. DIY Prison Beauty: Part 1
I'll probably never forget these smoke glasses in the "Telephone" video. Or maybe "eye accessories" makes more sense? I guess she doesn't think much of these guys. I can certainly imagine her life in prison, decorated with burning cigarettes and chains. Very quacky.
6. DIY Prison Beauty: Part 2
Gaga once again proved she's the queen of beauty and hair care, even if her supplies are limited to soda cans. Let's be honest, they're more than just DIY curlers, these soda cans are a full-blown statement accessory. Plus, I can never get enough of Gaga's studded leather.
7. Pressure holding heat
Gaga has stepped up her bra designs since her disco days on The Fame . In the "Alejandro" video, she upgrades to an all-powerful cannon, turning her breasts into leather-wrapped lethal weapons. Honestly, there's nothing hotter than this.
8. Skeletons are “born that way”
This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. If you're a big fan of Tim Burton or the zombie aesthetic, and you're fascinated by tattoos, you'll probably enjoy the "Born This Way" video. I used to watch this video over and over just to experience this cool skeleton look. Gaga's makeup looks like that of her co-star Rick Genest, who's makeup is more long-lasting. The model, dubbed "Zombie Boy," has a tattoo of a living skeleton. I can't think of anything worse. Plus, I love this gown and its cool, exaggerated shoulders.
9. Leather Lolita
Again, I love Gaga in leather. This weird looking strap thing took my vibe to the next level. She likes to accessorize with stud earrings, winged eyes and red lips. I used a photo from one of her music videos to model the first winged eye I drew. This skunky black and white bob has me practically rushing to my stylist to get the same look.
10. Hot chaos in "Marry The Night"
In the "Marry the Night" video, Gaga is almost completely naked (except when she's wearing bedazzled denim or spilled milk and cereal), crying with bold eyeliner and bleach stuck to her hair . This video, this song, this image , speaks to me on so many levels. She is recovering from a period in a mental hospital to pursue her dream of becoming a recording artist and dancer in the city. It doesn't get more true than this.
11. The ultimate and the only one: Joe Calderon
When I first saw the "You and Me" video, I was blown away by Gaga's sexy alter ego, Jo Calderone. He can be a rough guy, and he can be a jerk in real life. But Gaga is a very beautiful man. After the video and VMAs, that's it for Mr. Calderone. The alter-ego itself may be a bit problematic, but we can only hope she acts more manly again. Because she was absolutely shocked .
