Tesco is now selling controversial Marmite hummus

You know when you see some fancy new invention and wish you were smart enough to create it? Stay tuned for Marmite Houmous, the latest combination product to hit Tesco shelves.

Allow me to fan the flames of controversy and say that the beloved puree of chickpeas, lemon, garlic, tahini, and olive oil might be a little boring. So the news that Tesco is now selling a much-improved version (for Marmite fans, anyway) is refreshing.

For many people, the mere smell of Marmite causes their salivary glands to overproduce. That means the mere word of any umami-laden product will have them rushing into the store screaming "Take my money." Luckily for those on a budget, this 200g bucket of paradise is on sale for £1.50. This means you can buy more than one at a time.

However, as you'd expect, reviews for Marmite Houmous have certainly been mixed. On one hand, Twitter users expressed their excitement and joy. On the other hand...well, I haven't seen vitriol like this in a while.

Aside from the fact that haters are going to hate Marmite regardless of the product, a slightly controversial factor that many Twitter users pointed out is that Marmite Houmous contains dairy. "@marmite and hummus are both famously vegan, why does Marmite Houmous contain milk?" one disappointed Twitter user wrote. Another said: "Marmite is vegan. Hummus is vegan. Why isn't Marmite hummus vegan?!?!"

However, if any plant-based Marmite fans are feeling a little lonely, remember that Marmite Peanut does exist, and yes, it's vegan.
