If you grew up watching "Sesame Street ," you can now stream one of your favorite TV shows in style this summer. The new KAWS x UNIQLO Sesame Street collaboration will be filled with minimalist, streetwear-approved pieces that will let you add a little Bert, Ernie, and Big Bird to your life.
KAWS is a graffiti artist and designer known primarily for his paintings and toy sculptures – most notably The Companion – so creating cartoon-like collaborative pieces is right up his alley. This will be KAWS's second collaboration with the Japanese fast-fashion store, with his first collection featuring a Peanuts theme that included everything from graffitied Snoopy T-shirts to simple crew-neck sweatshirts.
Paying homage to the beloved PBS television show, the new series will feature fan-favorite characters such as Oscar the Grouch, Elmo, Cookie Monster and more. This will be a T-shirt only collection to give you a reason to wear graphic T-shirts as an adult.
But unlike those tacky clothes we wore in middle school, these will fit you better. Each T-shirt is available in a variety of colors, and all feature Sesame Street characters, with some also featuring KAWS' iconic Companion cartoon characters.
There are high-impact T-shirts to choose from, as well as minimalist options to browse, and you can choose a T-shirt with a Sesame Street graphic printed on the entire shirt or one with just a small badge on the shirt pocket.
KAWS first shared news of the upcoming Uniqlo release on his Instagram, captioning the photo: "I'm looking forward to this summer project.. #KAWS #UTxKAWSxSESAMESTREET"
The cool thing about this collaboration is that KAWS brings his own unique style to the collection. Discarded eyes are his trademark, along with bubble-shaped ears that look like a skull and crossbones, like those seen in Cookie Monster. They are his own cartoon creations and can be seen in the form of statues all over the world, from museums to unexpected squares.
As of now, there's no official word on when the collection will be available at Uniqlo, but he did hint that it will be available sometime during the summer.
Uniqlo often collaborates with artists and designers to bring freshness to their seasonal collections, just as H&M and Target have expanded into luxury brands. The most eye-catching thing this year is the JW Anderson mix and match model from Uniqlo's 2018 spring and summer series, which is still available. The British label takes traditional British clothing and gives them a fresh, edgy twist, creating pieces like denim bucket hats, patchwork asymmetrical striped skirts and ruffle-collared shirts. It's very nautical and 90's combined.
Uniqlo also launched a limited-edition Marvel collection to commemorate the superhero franchise's popular days and pieced it together by asking fans to submit their own design ideas. Out of 8,500 entries, only 17 were chosen and this became the official line.
Each t-shirt is completely different in design and visuals, and looking at how they were made by different artists, they prove to be some very interesting pieces. From Hulk T-shirts with Hulk spelling out his name on his body, to Captain America burgers, to neon Guardians of the Galaxy T-shirts, it's creative and fun.
