'Mayans MC' Has 'Lots of Potential' for Spinoffs After Series Finale

When FX announced the end of Mayans Season 5 in January, fans knew the final journey wouldn't be easy. Actor JD Pardo, who plays Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes, warned: "I wish I could tell you that there really are these happy endings where everyone is at peace and joy at the end. ” series finale on July 19. "But we've set the stage for a dark drama, an emotional drama, and a drama with characters who are living with trauma. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Some big consequences are coming."

The Sons of Anarchy spinoff, which premiered in 2018, centers on the eponymous motorcycle club's St. Padre Charter, which finds itself preparing for one final battle heading into the season five finale. After four seasons of The Line Between Good and Evil , EZ's fate remains one of the biggest questions following the deaths of several other major characters, including him and Angel (Clayton Cardenas) )’s father, Felipe (Edward James Olmos), in the crime drama’s penultimate episode.

Pardo admitted that he "cried on [showrunner] Elgin James' shoulder" after filming the final scene of "Mayans MC ." While viewers are sure to share the sentiment, the actor hopes this might not be the end of the road. When a Collider interviewer mentioned the possibility of a Broken Saints spinoff, he responded: "You never know. The Sons of Anarchy universe is scary. There's a lot of potential there, and more importantly , has a huge fan base.”

FX Entertainment president Nick Grad previously confirmed that there would not be a Mayans MC season 6, noting in a statement that "the Mayans fight for respect, territory, and power over four intense seasons. , which sets the stage for an explosive fifth season that will test the Mayans' ability to survive under EZ's newly claimed leadership. ” He thanked the creative team, crew and cast of Season 5, which also includes Danny Pino (Miguel Galindo), Carla Baratta (Luisa “Adelita” Espina), Michael Irby (Obispo "Bishop" Lothar), Emilio Rivera (Marcus) Alvarez), Sarah Bolger (Emily Thomas), Frankie Loyal (Hank "El Tranq" Loza), Joseph Lucero (Nelon "The Creeper" Vargas) and Vincent Vargas ( Gilberto "Jili" Lopez).

Even before FX announced its fifth and final season, James, who co-created the series with Kurt Sutter, revealed that he already knew how Mayans would end its run. "I know the last shot," he revealed to Variety at the 2022 Season 4 premiere. "I would just say it's got to be at least one more [season]. But we know exactly where it ends and we've been heading in that direction for a while."

In a June 2023 interview with Collider, Pardo said it was "hard to hear" that James had decided to end the series ahead of a possible sixth season, and reflected on the "bittersweet" ending to his journey. "When I first booked this show, it was a dream come true and all my dreams were over," he explained. "When it came to Mayans , I made a point of making sure I was present every moment so that when it was over, I didn't look back and say, 'Man, I wish I could, could.' In that sense, the dream It’s over, so it’s natural to feel sad, but when you lose something, you gain something, and now I’m very excited.”
