A Beginner’s Guide to Applying False Eyelashes to Yourself

Applying false eyelashes at home is the ideal situation. You can get enviable long lashes for a fraction of the cost of eyelash extensions, without ever leaving the comfort of your home. It's a win-win...except for the fact that applying eyelashes yourself can be difficult. It's really tough.

But not all hope is lost. With a little guidance on how to get started and some practice, you'll be a pro in no time. Here, celebrity makeup artist Ash K Holm breaks down how to apply false lashes for beginners. Follow these four simple steps.

1. Trim false eyelashes

According to Holm, the number one mistake she finds people make when wearing false eyelashes is wearing the wrong eyelashes. She said that when the illusion hangs on the eyes, it causes the eyes to droop downward. She recommends lifting the lash strips over your eyes as the first step to avoiding this.

"Before gluing on your lashes, we should all take the necessary extra steps to make sure it fits perfectly," she says. Don't know how to trim false eyelashes? Holm says to start at the outer corners and cut away until perfect.

How much to trim depends entirely on what feels best to you, and can range from one to four levels. Make sure to only cut off a little bit at a time. Otherwise, the strip may end up shorter than you expected.

2. Apply eyelash glue strategically

For some false lashes, you can apply glue to the lash band. Holm said she prefers to apply a small amount of glue to the entire strap first to make it a little tacky before applying. (If you don't wait long enough for the adhesive to become tacky, the lashes may slide right off and create a gooey mess.)

Using a product like KISS Felt Tip Glue Liner Lash Adhesive, you can apply glue directly to your lash line and instantly apply fake bangs. "Lash glue liner also makes things a breeze, lining the lash line first and then applying the lashes immediately because it goes on instantly and you can never make a mistake because it's sheer," she explain.

She recommends using it like eyeliner on both eyes. Next, use a lash applicator to pick up the lash strip from its center. Finally, place the strip where the glue was applied.

3. Tilt your head back

Holm says the best way to apply eyelashes is to tilt your head back slightly and place your lashes directly in the center, rather than looking straight ahead or down in the mirror.

"I prefer to tilt my head back when applying lashes to my lash line because I can clearly see what I'm doing without letting my real lashes get in the way of application," she says. "Placing the lashes directly down into the lash line helps position the lashes comfortably."

She recommends not using a hand mirror so you can focus on placing the lashes correctly before the glue dries completely.

4. Press real eyelashes and false eyelashes together

The last step is to secure the false eyelashes so they don't fall out. Holm says to use mascara to press your real and false lashes together. Make sure the inner and outer corners blend together and then you're good to go. You've successfully given yourself false eyelashes. Your beauty looks much better.
