Simon Cowell is in talks to make a full-length Betty Boop movie. Variety reports that Cowell's production company, Syco Entertainment, is teaming up with Animal Logic Entertainment to produce the first full-length Betty Boop movie since 1939. Dave McNary writes that Cowell's production company and the animation team behind The Lego Movie are working with the original Betty Boop character, who first appeared in 1930, as a dynamic, Sexy 1920s modern girl. The reboot is being called a "hybrid animated comedy," which doesn't tell us much about what the film will look like. The original Betty Boop character was known for her neck-high cleavage and adorable sexy vibe, which seemed inappropriate for a children's animated movie. So does that leave an animated/semi-live action comedy for adults? At this point, it's anyone's guess.
Jezebel 's Kelly Faircloth calls Cowell's Betty Boop remake "no one clamored for," and she has a point: Although the character was once so popular, she's been retired for so long that it seems like an unconventional one character, the decision to bring her back though wasn't necessarily a bad thing, especially for Cowell.
Vulture 's Lindsay Weber wrote that she would nominate Zooey Deschanel for the role of Betty if the movie became live-action or ended up involving non-animated characters. Deschanel is great and seems like a sure win if the role comes up, but there are plenty of great, very cute actresses who could be the perfect Betty (if Deschanel, like this, gets tired of cornering the market on cuteness ) wacky or doing other projects). For example:
Christine Schaal
Although she gives off more of an olive oil vibe, Schaal could totally pull off the real-life Betty Boop. Plus, I just love talking about how much I love Kristen Schaal.
Ginnifer Goodwin
She's so cute, like Bop.
Mae Whitman
Mae Whitman is quirky, adorable, and totally awesome.
Lucy Hale
Lucy Hale has the most perfect Betty Boop face ever. Finish.
reese witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon is probably my favorite (totally hypothetical) potential Betty Boop right now (again, in my own opinion). Betty Boop needs to be made into a live-action movie, if only to recreate Witherspoon's adorable self in the early 2000s.
