The Crown Season 5 Soundtrack Is Full of Pop Gems

After years of anticipation, Season 5 of The Crown finally aired on November 9, bringing with it a soundtrack filled with hits from the season's timeline, which spans from 1991 to the early summer of 1997, when Shortly before Princess Diana's fatal car crash in August. . The latest installment has a lot of shoes to fill, as season four has some real gems. Who could forget, for example, "Edge of Seventeen," which was played when the soon-to-be Princess Diana was out for a night with friends after her engagement to Prince Charles? Stevie Nicks' iconic song essentially became the anthem for young Princess Diana's difficult entry into the royal family.

"Hearing the strength and vulnerability in it, it really reflected Diana's ending," The Crown 's musical director Sarah Bridges told Variety last year. "It felt like a perfect post-credits moment that gave a sense of isolation, loneliness, and reflected Diana's emotions and where she was at the end of that episode. Steve was really excited for us to introduce it."

This time around, another iconic artist, Mariah Carey, is equally delighted with the soundtrack for The Crown season five. The first episode follows Princess Diana's happy moments on holiday with her sons, Kelly's "emotions." "Of course I had to have my own screening baby," Carey wrote on Twitter, thanking Netflix and The Crown for the musical nod.

Kelly also shared her unique viewing setup - which includes her dog, tiara and tea (of course!) - and surprisingly, two screens appeared to be streaming The Crown at the same time: one with Season 5, and the other One is the first season. It’s all great for me,” she said in the video.

Of course, Kyrie is in some good company this season. Here's a list of other popular songs you'll hear on The Crown Season 5 soundtrack and when they were played:

  • The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony (Season 5 Trailer)
  • "Emotion" by Mariah Carey (Episode 1)
  • "My Destiny" by Lionel Richie (Episode 2)
  • "Don't Sweat the Technique" by Eric B. and Rakim (Episode 5)
  • "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star (Episode 7)
  • A Girl Like You (Episode 7) by Edwin Collins
  • "One Night Only" from Dreamgirls (Episode 8)
  • Physics with Olivia Newton-John (Episode 8)
  • Shaggy's "Boombastic" (Episode 8)
  • "Fly Like an Eagle" by Seal (Episode 10)
  • "Things Can Only Get Better" by D:Ream (Episode 10)

Season 5 of The Crown ended shortly before Princess Diana's death, but as The Independent points out, the season's music certainly hinted at her impending tragic fate. The Verve song used in this season's trailer was released in June 1997, two months before the royal family's car crash in Paris. “Cause this is a bittersweet symphony, that’s what life is,” one line from the song reads; “I need to hear some voices to recognize the pain inside me,” says another.
