A lot has been revealed about Britney Spears' now-infamous relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake in her memoir, The Woman Inside Me . So far, she claims he cheated on her "multiple times" and that she got pregnant and had an abortion during their relationship, among other things.
Now, new details about their split have emerged, including how the "Toxic" singer filmed a music video 10 minutes after being dumped via text message.
More breakup details revealed
Hulu's Impact x Nightline released an episode on November 2 dedicated to the pop princess following the release of her memoir. In it, "Overprotected" music video director Chris Applebaum shares how Spears got to work immediately after their breakup.
On the set of the "Overprotected" music video, Applebaum recalled feeling "immediately" that something was wrong with the singer.
"I walked into her trailer and Britney wasn't dressed for the next scene," Applebaum recalled in the episode. "She's not ready, her hair and makeup aren't ready. She's still wearing a Juicy Couture tracksuit."
He continued, "I asked her if everything was okay, and she said, 'No, things aren't okay, because you see,' and then she pulled out her flip phone and I saw this text message that said, 'Everything is okay. it's over.'"
The director confirmed the message came from Justin Timberlake, whom she was dating at the time. He added, "That seemed to be the end of the video shoot, and I admitted that to everyone."
Britney is "hot"
However, Applebaum gave Spears a choice: "If you want to go out and let him know that he just lost the best thing he ever had, then do that."
Spears decided to shoot despite having just been dumped via text message after a three-year relationship.
Which one is "overprotective"?
While the OG "Overprotected" was released in 2001 as part of her self-titled third studio album , Britney , Applebaum directed "Darkchild Remix," which was released a few months later in April 2002.
The music video begins with Spears seeing media criticism of her exposed "cramps" and deciding to sneak off to a dance club with friends. The video, choreographed by Brian Friedman, features Spears' signature dance moves, including one in the pouring rain.
Applebaum spoke about the shoot back in March 2002, praising Spears for her "stamina" and "patience" during the 23-hour shoot. He even said that Spears "conceived the treatment herself," adding that "the shoot went very smoothly."
