If Taylor Swift's new "From the Vault" song is any indication, she might sometimes wish she was Emma Stone. When the tracklist for "Speak Now" (Tyler's version) was first announced, Swift immediately speculated that "When Emma Falls in Love" was about the Oscar winner, given their long friendship, especially in the country. The friendship especially flourished while Swift was working on "Speak Now." Fans didn't receive certified confirmation when the re-recording took place on July 7, but the song's lyrics do contain a sly reference to Stone, making this theory possible.
At its core, "When Emma Falls" is an ode to friendship, as Swift reflects on the way "Emma" behaves when she falls in love and experiences heartbreak, and most importantly, how she affects those who fall in love. Although they were not dating when Swift wrote the song, Stone's ex-boyfriend Andrew Garfield once said in an interview that "she was like basking in the sun."
The lyrics "Well, she's so New York when she's in L.A." may also refer to Stone, as the two were spotted hanging out in New York multiple times during Swift's recording of "Speak Now," despite her living in L.A. then. Some fans also speculated that this could be a reference to Stone's Oscar-winning performance in La La Land , but considering the film wasn't released until 2015, that may not be the case.
Of course, since Swift doesn't reveal her last name in the song, fans may never be entirely sure it's Stone she's singing about. Other possibilities include Jane Austen's classic novel Emma or even her Valentine's Day co-star Emma Roberts. But given their history, and Swift's penchant for writing songs inspired by the love lives of close friends, it wouldn't be that far off to declare "When Emma Falls in Love" an ode to her and Stone's friendship.
