London-born girl band FLO have had one hell of a year. Following in the footsteps of Adele, Florence and The Machine and Sam Smith, the trio made history as the first group to win the Brit Rising Star Award. The group may well take the crown as the hottest song of the summer soon. Their new single "Fly Girl." Aside from the fact that it's a straight-up smash about breaking away from objectification and celebrating independence, it's also chock-full of '90s nostalgia, with multiple nods to big hits.
In addition to sampling Missy Elliott's 2002 classic "Work It," the choir also borrowed one of the rap legend's original lyrics: "If you're a fly girl, get your nails done." On top of that, FLO also invited Eliot as their featured artist, and in a new poem, she pays homage to another of her quips. "Do I still look like Halle Berry?" she said, winking at the camera.
The line is a direct reference to Eliot's legendary quip in "Work It" - "Let's get drunk, it'll bring us closer/Don't I look like a Halle Berry poster?" It turns out that the American actor is also a huge FLO fan. When she shared the music video on social media, one fan replied: "Add this to the long list of songs calling out Halle Berry." "I love them all..." the actor replied.
From her collaboration with Bree Runway on "ATM" and Lizzo's "Tempo" to a verse on Little Mix's De La Soul-sampling "How You Doin?" Other fans pointed out that Elliott also has a strong track record of championing and championing new musical talent early in their careers. Fans—including Halle Berry herself—are loving the throwback single. Check out the song and reactions below.
