Miley Cyrus is about to usher in 2023. She hosted a highly successful New Year's Eve show and performed several duets with godmother Dolly Parton, including her own "Wrecking Ball" and Parton's "I Will Always Love You." That's all until the clock strikes 12 o'clock.
Cyrus has been brewing a new era since December. Cyrus shared a promotional clip for her upcoming new single "Flowers" in a video on Instagram that read, "New Year, New Miley." Whether she's referring to a new perspective that matches that sound has yet to be determined, but first, she'll be releasing a single on January 13 — and fans have every reason to believe the song will be about her ex diss song-husband. Bustle reached out to Cyrus for comment but had not heard back as of press time.
First, the news comes on what would have been her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth's 33rd birthday. coincide? Probably not.
The two exes met on the set of the 2010 film The Last Song and had an on-again, off-again relationship before eventually tying the knot in 2018. Less than a year later, Hemsworth filed for divorce from Cyrus. Although the Hannah Montana star rarely talks about their marriage, during the filming of Lollapalooza in March 2022, she called it a "fucking disaster."
On January 1, Cyrus shared a video with a sample of the song on Instagram, and the lyrics seemed to throw shade at the "Hunger Games" star. "Can love me better. Yeah, I can love you better than you can," Cyrus sings. (Other campaign material she shared includes lyrics like: "I can fuck me better than you can," "I can buy myself flowers," and "I can make myself dance.")

Some also believed that Cyrus' actions in the video were a reference to a 2019 red carpet interview she had with her ex-boyfriend that has now gone viral. In an interview with Access Hollywood , the former couple were asked what the dance was like between the two and fans were a little nervous. When Cyrus started grinding on Hemsworth, showing off her twerking-related dance moves to the host, Hemsworth immediately shut it down. "We don't do this. Not on the carpet," he told her. She stopped immediately. (In another infamous red carpet moment between them, Hemsworth told Cyrus to "behave.")
Fans noticed that the dance moves were eerily similar to those Cyrus performed in her promotional video for "Flowers." She even bit her lip while dancing.
This isn't the first time Cyrus has sung about her ex. On The Howard Stern Show in December 2020, Cyrus confirmed that the song "WTF Do I Know?" from her Plastic Hearts album had a lyric about Hemsworth, specifically. The line “I’m not even thinking about you.” Her 2019 ballad "Slide Away" was also about their breakup, and even "Wrecking Ball" was widely seen as hinting at a breakup early in their relationship.
No matter who "Flowers" is about—it already sounds like bebop.
