In recent years, the release of musical biopics has gained traction: Bohemian Rhapsody , Rocketman and I Want to Dance with Somebody, for example. And the influx appears to show no signs of slowing. Now, it's being reported that the life story of the late George Michael (who died in 2016) is coming to the big screen, with The White Lotus season 2 star Theo James in line to take on the coveted role.
According to the Daily Mail , the film, which is said to be in the "final stages" of development, will follow the "Careless Whisper" singer's life and career, from his Wham! era leading up to the years of his huge success as a solo artist. Insiders also claimed that the storyline, which centers on drug use and public scandal, "will not be swept under the rug" and that producers believe James is the "perfect" choice to play the "Faith" hitmaker.
"The script is in its final stages and producers are looking for a leading man," a source said. "Theo's name is on everyone's lips. He's perfect for the role. This is George's story, absolutely. Flawless.”
During an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live ," host Andy Cohen asked the "Divergent" star if he would be interested in playing Michael in a big-screen biopic, to which James replied: "Oh, yeah, I would. Like. He's an icon," James (real name Theodore Tapticlis) added of his shared Greek ancestry with the "Fastlove" performer, "He's a little bit Greek and I'm a little bit. Greek origin.”
Viewers were quick to share their thoughts on the biopic starring the actor following his WWHL appearance, and fans seem to be very supportive of it.
"Theo James would make a fantastic George Michael," one fan wrote on Twitter, while another joked they were "showing off" his portrayal of the British music icon.
