Katy Perry regrets spray tan mistake in her 'California Gurls' music video

Although in 2010's "California Gurls" music video, Katy Perry wore bedazzling Daisy Dukes and a cream-colored shoot bra among other candy-covered creations, But the biggest regret from the shoot had nothing to do with her outfit. The musician, who loves fashion satire, details everything from her viral Super Bowl performance to her Met Gala cheeseburger look in Vogue as she revisits the costly tanning mistake that cost her She feels less "refined, fresh, and fierce." Luckily, she can now laugh off her beauty gaffe.

"The funny story behind this is I look pretty tan here, right?" she said while looking back at the shoot for Vogue's "Life in Looks" video, released on March 24. Turns out she broke her cardinal rule of spray tan the night before a big event because she "just didn't" have the time. So Perry applied the bronzing solution hours before filming. There was a major problem with her timing, though.

"When you tan the morning of your music video shoot, your skin tone will gradually change throughout the day," the American Idol judge explains. "So, I just kept getting orange, orange, orange. We had to spend a lot of extra money color grading this music video because in one part of the music video, I was this orange, and then in the music I’m this orange in the next part of the video. Here’s a tip, kids: fake tan the night before.”

After the clip for the Teenage Dream album's lead single was deleted, Perry broke down some of her most over-the-top looks, including whipped cream and a cupcake bra. In the video for "California Gurls," Snoop Dogg plays an evil sugar daddy who sends an army of gummy bears to attack the pop star, and Snoop Dogg has a verse in the song. "These cream [boobs] were in the music video because that was my only ammunition," she told MTV News in June 2010. "I've got to kill those really evil gummy bears. I've got to show them who's boss in Candifonia: the Gurls. The California Girls, of course."

While the cupcake bra was a bit cumbersome, she and stylist Johnny Wujek had a lot of fun creating the look. "I'll tell you, those cupcake bra boobs, they're a little heavy, but they're fun," Perry added. "It was really fun making these costumes. They're all unique and I love the moment when Bette Page wears red and the whipped cream can."

The tanning failure isn't Perry's only recent career regret. The singer revealed in January that she passed up the opportunity to collaborate with Billie Eilish on the song "Ocean Eyes." On January 27, 102.7 KIIS-FM shared a video in which Perry admitted to fans, "She was just a blonde girl and I was like, 'bored,'" but didn't reveal the extent to which she would collaborate. . Eilish. “Big mistake. Huge mistake. Don’t let this get on the internet.”
