'Grey's Anatomy' Season 20 Theory Says Lucas is the New George

Many comparisons have been made between the new interns on Grey's Anatomy and the original Magic Squad (aka Meredith, Alex, George, Izzy, and Cristina). Yes, there are certainly similar storylines at play — but none more familiar than the one teased at the end of Grey's May 16 episode.

To recap: After the interns take their residency exams, a promo for next week's episode shows Dr. Ultraman and Dr. Bailey breaking some bad news to Lucas. Apparently, he wasn't doing very well. "Our committee recommends that you remediate your internship year," Bailey said.

"Do I have to start over?" Lucas asked, clearly worried. Bailey didn't answer him in the brief clip, but that certainly means Lucas will have to go back to where he started.

Ringing alarm bells?

Lucas could follow in George's footsteps

Of course, this isn't the first time Bailey has had this conversation: George O'Malley failed his exams and had to repeat his internship year. Bailey, a resident at the time, found this difficult to accept. She even told George that she felt like she had let him down, even though he assured her that wasn't the case.

Like his predecessors, Lucas had a rough first year in the hospital - so this was certainly a natural progression for his character.

ABC

Of course, that's not the only similarity between George and Lucas. Both interns face the ups and downs of their personal lives as they sit for exams - George cheats on Kelly with Izzie, and Lucas hooks up with Simon, only to snub her the next day.

On X (formerly Twitter), some fans speculated that Lucas would indeed follow in George's footsteps. "Will Lucas redo his internship year like George?!" one viewer wondered. Another couldn't help but point out the irony that Derek's nephew, of all people, "will be the new George of the intern group and have to repeat a year."

More Gray changes

You may recall that George finally convinced Dr. Weber to let him retake the test at the end of season four — but for much of that season, his residency looked very different from that of his peers who passed the test.

Whether or not Lucas follows the same path, it looks like Grey's Anatomy's cast of surgeons may be changing soon. Deadline recently reported that Jake Borelli and Midori Francis (who play Levi Schmitt and Mika Yasuda, respectively) will star in Episode 20 left the show after the season ended. ABC has yet to confirm the exit, but Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital's absence will certainly be felt.
