Chad Michael Murray says One Tree Hill reboot 'needs'

Chad Michael Murray shares fans' desire for a One Tree Hill reboot. The actor told Today on May 9 that a revival of the hit teen drama was "necessary."

The show ran for nine seasons (2003-2012) and focused on half-brothers Lucas (Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Rafferty) in North Carolina Teenage years spent in the fictional town of Tree Hill.

Murray outlined what a reboot might look like, saying it could "deal with all the trials and tribulations that young people are going through today, dealing with social media, discrimination and all the other things in the world that we can shine a light on."

Murray added that the show has gained a whole new fan base in the streaming era. “I met fans who were 13, 14, 15 years old and they were obsessed with the show,” he said. "They weren't alive when we started filming. It blew my mind. This was a new show for them."

His comments echo what he told E! News of potential revival in December 2023. "I just can't see a world where something doesn't happen," he said.

During the December interview, he also teased that "something's going to happen" regarding a One Tree Hill reunion, whether it's in the form of a live script reading or an all-new series. “This show changed and shaped the lives of so many young people,” he said.

Murray isn't the only One Tree Hill star to recently share ideas for a reboot. Sophia Bush (aka Brooke Davis) told E! In January she was interested in a "feminist" renaissance.

"For a long time our answer to that was a firm 'no'. We were really ready to put it on hold," she said. "Then the girls and I decided that was our show and we should take it back, and now we're like, 'Well, what would a feminist takeback of our show look like?'"

One Tree Hill 20th Anniversary

In September 2023, Murray celebrated the 20th anniversary of the show's pilot, writing on his Instagram Story: "Happy 20th Fam #3. If you asked me in 2003...I never would have dreamed we'd still have one Such a magical bond.”

The actor's "One Tree Hill" co-stars include Bush, Hilary Burton Morgan, Danielle Ackles, Bevan Prince, Stephen Colletti, Austin Nico Elsewhere and Matt Barr, who also marked the milestone, reunited on the show's original set in November 2023.
