Tina Knowles says Beyoncé was 'very shy' as a child, stood up to bullies

Tina Knowles is sharing childhood memories of Beyoncé. In a new interview with Vogue , she recalled that her eldest daughter was a "very shy" child.

"She was bullied a little bit," she told the magazine. “But the day she stood up for someone — she didn’t stand up for herself, but she stood up for them — I get emotional talking about it and I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Tina also talked about her youngest daughter, Solange Knowles ("She's only in fifth grade and she goes out and signs petitions, so she's always been an activist") and Bey's Destiny's Child band Member Kelly Rowland, who was 11 years old at the time (“Kelly was always a kid who tried to protect everyone. I remember her with her best friend Barbara, who was A mediator is just a little peacemaker”).

In an Instagram caption accompanying the video interview, Tina encouraged parents to "celebrate the positive differences in their children."

"My three daughters all handle things very differently. Understand their individuality and respect their individuality," she wrote. "Pay attention to things you can brag about. They love it and it encourages positive behavior."

Tina shares two daughters with ex-husband Matthew Knowles. According to People magazine , they welcomed their first child, Beyoncé, in 1981, and Solange was born five years later in 1986. Tina and Mathew divorced in 2011 after more than 30 years together. "The decision to end our marriage was an amicable one. We remain friends, parents and business partners," they said in a statement at the time.

In 2021, Tina published an open letter to her "four incredible daughters," mentioning Loren, her niece Angie, and her two biological children.

"Kelly, I know without a doubt that you are a true gift from God," she wrote. "You have lived with us since you were 11 years old. You were the sweetest, kindest person I have ever met and still are. You are also a true survivor. You never give up. Your discipline and drive are always It inspires me.”
