Anika Noni Rose Just Responded to the Viral Dreamgirls Trend

In 2006, The Dreams sang "Dreamgirls will never leave you," and it's proven to be true — even on TikTok nearly 20 years later. On New Year's Day, star Anika Noni Rose responded to the Dreamgirls TikTok challenge, putting her own spin on the viral trend inspired by her character.

In the musical film, Rose plays Laurel, a member of the fictional girl group The Dreams (inspired by Diana Ross and the Supremes) who often has to sing backing vocals for Dina, played by Beyoncé. The TikTok challenge pokes fun at the fact that Lorell has to smile and pose like a '60s comic in between sounds in the background, making for some hilarious and over-the-top entertainment.

In her videos, Rose pulls faces in various everyday situations, such as waking up in the morning, cooking for her husband, and getting a towel from him in the shower. "Stepping into the new year is like..." she captioned the video.

On Instagram, Ross acknowledged the trend and took it in stride. "Attention everyone," she wrote in the post. “Happy New Year! Love you. (Emoji trying to take credit for my eyebrows.)”

Fans flocked to the comments section to call the video "genius" and "perfect." "I screamed, LMAOOOO," one user wrote. "We've been waiting for this! Our dream girl!!!" said another.

"Okay! The challenge is officially over!!! You win!!!" a third chimed in with a laughing emoji.

dreamgirls reunion

In November 2022, Rose reunited with her Dreamgirls co-star Jennifer Hudson, best known for her role as Dreamgirls member Effie White on Hudson's talk show Following her Oscar win, Rose shared her fondest memories of the pair on set with Beyoncé on the show.

"I think the first thing I remember, and I remember really fondly, is the first moment the three of us sang together, and that blend of voices hit the spot," Ross said, mimicking the surprised looks on their faces .

"Because the mix isn't something you create. It's either there or it's not, which is awesome."

Neither Hudson nor Beyonce have taken on the Dreamgirls challenge yet, but considering it's now been approved by Laurel, it's probably just a matter of time.
