Chanel is not only considered by many to be a giant in the world of clothing, but it is also an innovative brand that engages with youth and contemporary culture. The design house's latest show proved this, with Chanel incorporating emojis into its Autumn/Winter 2016 collection, which debuted at Paris Fashion Week. This isn't surprising, since designer and creative director Karl Lagerfeld launched his own line of emojis, EmotiKarl, in 2014. But with the news that Willow Smith has been named Chanel ambassador, it's becoming increasingly clear that the brand celebrates not just youth culture, but the interests of today's young people.
Among the infamous double C Chanel logo found on some garments, you can also find the thumbs up emoji, cat emoji, four leaf clover emoji, peace sign emoji, flower emoji and more. In my opinion, analyzing clothes and trying to figure out as many emojis as possible is actually a pretty fun game for someone obsessed with fashion (or iPhones).
After Kim Kardashian's "Kimojis" became a hit in the Apple App Store the day they were released, and the cry-laughing emoji became the Oxford English Dictionary's 2015 word of the year, emojis are arguably the most popular thing right now. One of the common forms of communication and expression in the culture we have in 2016. No wonder Chanel used these little characters in its new collection.
The subtlety lies in the removal of the bright colors typical of emoji keyboards. Instead, soft neutrals and gray tones hide the emoji as a mysterious pattern. It's like a silent shout-out to our iPhone-focused culture, without making Moschino take it too seriously. Instead, Chanel incorporates these designs into its classic looks, maintaining the brand's signature air of elegance and impressive cultural relevance.
Chanel isn't the only brand to adopt emoji themes for its fashion and beauty products, though. Karl Lagerfeld just brought emojis to the world of high fashion, but the trend is catching on all over the world.
