So I haven’t set many goals for myself in the new year, but improving my self-care skills is definitely one of my goals. If you're like me (and also happen to be passionate about new age practices and holistic healing), then I have a great new place to put on your 2019 travel radar. Eaton Health is a brand new self-care oriented holistic health center in Washington, D.C. opening in January 2019 (in other words, just in time to meet our 2019 self-care goals). Offering everything from crystal healing and astrology readings to infrared saunas and yoga, the Eaton Wellness Center will focus on the mind-body/spirit connection through new age, holistic and indigenous products. Oh, and did I mention it's located in the same hotel as the Eaton Hotel - meaning you can book your own accommodation and enjoy all the great treatments the center has to offer? It is sure to become a popular destination for anyone seeking holistic health and wellness, offering visitors a completely unique therapeutic experience through its extensive range of classes and workshops. Can we just say I booked a flight to Washington yesterday?
To give you some background, Eaton Wellness is a division of Eaton Workshop, a mission-driven company dedicated to merging progressive social change with the hospitality industry. The Wellness Center is an integral new part of the Eaton District, opening in the fall of 2018, and also includes the aforementioned hotel (hotel guests will also have access to the Wellness Center) as well as co-working spaces and media centers.
Although the wellness center is located on the same property as the hotel, it is definitely not a facility exclusive to hotel guests. The center is designed to be a center for mental health and alternative therapies open to Washington, D.C. community members and visitors, so anyone can take advantage of the center’s services—locals, travelers, and hotel guests. Offering everything from traditional Eastern-style healing modalities to popular New Age spiritual practices, the center is currently working with members of the local Native American community to incorporate traditional Native practices into the center's programming as well, in honor of A way of history. The land on which the center is located.
Bustle spoke with Eaton Studios founder and president Katherine Lo, whose vision is to reimagine the hotel as a gathering place for changemakers and creatives. "My personal background is in activism and filmmaking, but I also have a lifelong interest in holistic health and spiritual pursuits," Rowe tells Bustle. “My mission is to use the hospitality platform as a space for art, social change and holistic wellness.”
The center’s regular schedule is packed with immersive experiences, courses and workshops and is incredibly broad. Bustle also spoke with the center's director of wellness, Corinna Moon Loomis, who spoke to a wide range of treatment services. “We really wanted to create a community space that was rich with different modalities and resources for people—not just people in Washington, D.C., but people traveling and staying at Eaton,” Loomis explained. "We wanted to...create a space where people could access healing and wellness on so many different levels." And they did. Looking for exercise? They will offer classes in yoga, tai chi, qigong and more. Interested in bodywork? Book a Thai massage or spend some time in the infrared sauna. If you're like me and lean toward new age healing, you can indulge in their crystal healing sessions, monthly sound baths, chakra clearings, and even tarot and astrology readings. There are many other alternative therapies such as acupuncture, Reiki, reflexology and meditation sessions, and the center will work with experienced local practitioners and therapists as well as visitors who can run specialist workshops in the space.
Basically, this place is a dream world for all of my holistic healing and New Age junkies - and honestly, for anyone who cares about spiritually bettering themselves and the world around them. After all, the center emerged as a response to Law's belief that in order to heal the world, you must first heal yourself. “I feel like this shift toward holistic, new-age wellness is a key part of life today,” Rowe continued. “There are a lot of options in Los Angeles and New York, but there really aren’t a lot in Washington — so I’m excited to bring [the health center] here and hope to see it have a big impact on the local Washington community.” To host a variety of classes, the center features a yoga studio, meditation room, two infrared saunas, and private treatment rooms.
Since a large part of the company's mission focuses on creating social change, the health center's self-service reflects this. The center's approach is unique in that they are not only designed for your own health like most spas and treatment centers. The Eaton Wellness Center is designed to help heal your mind, body and spirit so you are more capable of giving healing energy back to the world. If that ’s not the dominant emotion of 2019, my friends, then I don’t know what is.
