When you're in your 20s, "life on a boat" seems like a very romantic idea, sacrificing the comforts of home for a yachting adventure in the archipelago—that is, until cabin fever sets in and you realize there's no one Just can't live. Full size shower. Christina Miles and partner Rohan Tully turned the whole idea on its head and subsequently built enviable luxury living on a boat...well, technically a barge . After struggling with the London property market, the couple decided to transform a Dutch barge into a high-end, colorful floating home. As you can guess, it's not an easy journey.
In this episode of Moving, the couple talks with Bustle about what inspired them to take the step and what they love most about their current living arrangements. Check out their home in the video below:
The renovation project lasted 20 months. The pair bought the boat in Belgium for just under £100,000. They eventually sailed it to the Netherlands where major adjustments were made, including splitting the ship in two and reducing its length by 10 meters to bring it in line with British mooring rules. What's truly unique about their boats are the 10 "extra-large" portholes, which flood the boat with light even on the rainiest days in the UK. All told, this stunning renovation resulted in an 1,800-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom family home with skylights.
The truly remarkable part of Christina and Rohan's journey is that they completed all the renovations while taking care of their newborn daughter, Elara. While this endeavor was very difficult for the pair, they found it to be so rewarding that they started their own business called Isla Yachts with the goal of helping others accomplish what they do and attract people every day More people are turning to boat life.
