This article explains how to get full-screen photos of incoming iPhone calls. It covers setting up full screen contact photos with new photos and existing contact photos. The instructions in this article apply to iPhones running iOS 8 through iOS 16.

If you're running iOS 17 or later, see how to make a contact poster on iPhone.

If you want to add a new photo of a contact to your iPhone, you can simply make it full screen for incoming calls. Just follow these steps to add photos to your contacts:

In iOS 14, incoming calls can also be set to appear as a small banner at the top of the screen instead of a full-screen photo. To get a full-screen photo, go to Settings > Phone > Incoming Calls > Full Screen .

  1. Open the Contacts app and tap on the contact's name.

  2. On the contact's information screen, tap Edit .

  3. Click "Add Photo" (or click "Edit" to replace an existing photo).

  4. Choose to take a photo or select a photo .

  5. Take a photo using your iPhone camera or select a photo from the Photos app.

  6. Move and scale the photo to fit the circle.

  7. Click to select or use the photo, depending on whether it's a new photo or one you already have.

  8. Click Done .

  9. When the contact you edited calls you, the photo you added to their contact information will appear full screen on your iPhone.

When you upgrade to an iOS version, photos on your phone and assigned to contacts may require different steps.

If your existing contact photos appear as small circular images, you'll need to make another change to make them full screen. You don't need to take a new photo; just edit the old photo and you'll be back to full-screen photos.

  1. Open the Phone or Contacts app and tap the contact's name.

  2. Click Edit .

  3. Select Edit below the current photo.

  4. Select Edit Photo .

  5. Move the existing photo a little bit. You don't need to edit it. Just a small change in its position is enough for the iPhone to record that some minor changes have occurred in the photo.

  6. Click to select .

  7. Select Done .

  8. The next time this person calls you, you'll see the photo in full-screen mode.

One drawback of this technology is that there is no setting to control this feature for all contacts. You have to repeat this process for each photo you want to display full screen for incoming calls.

Prior to iOS 7, the entire screen would be filled with the photo of the person calling you, assuming you assigned them a photo in the Contacts app.

In iOS 7, the full-screen image was replaced by a small circular image in the upper right corner of the incoming call screen.

In iOS 8, full-screen pictures of incoming calls are possible again, and in iOS 17, the editing capabilities of the incoming call screen have also been expanded. Contact Poster allows users to edit contact photos and photos that display across the entire screen.
