what we like
  • Long-term forecasts include as much detail as today.

  • Allergy information is displayed one week in advance.

what we don't like
  • It's easy to get overwhelmed by all the details.

  • Additional features such as no ads and reminders require a premium account.

AccuWeather is a behemoth, regularly in the top 10 most downloaded weather apps in the App Store. It's perfect for anyone planning a trip, work outing, running, picnic, etc. in the near future. There are two reasons for this: it displays a 15-day long-range weather forecast as well as a 4-hour, minute-by-minute weather forecast.

This is one of the first apps I always install on a new phone. I love that, at a glance, it's easy to know exactly when it's going to rain, snow, sleet, or hail before heading out. Plus, the map shows radar from one hour ago to two hours in the future, so planning ahead is easy.

The home screen shows everything you need to know now: the temperature, what it's like, today's high and low temperatures, and whether there's going to be precipitation in the coming hours.

The bottom menu has buttons for radar, hourly and daily forecasts, and sometimes hurricane information if there is a current threat. Some apps make you scroll through various menus to find these things, so it's nice that this app puts them right up front. Plus, with just a quick scroll you can see what's coming later today, with hourly and daily forecasts built into a long scrollable list, with high and low charts for quick viewing Temperature changes over time.

AccuWeather also shows when the sun rises and sets; shows if allergies such as tree pollen, dust and dander, grass pollen and mold are at high risk; lets you submit weather conditions; can track weather in multiple locations around the world; and in the app Popular weather-related news is built into the program.

But if it's too much to handle at once, you can always edit how things appear, removing or adding elements to the app that you do or don't want to see.

This is my full-time weather app on Android, but I've also tested it on iOS. Please visit the link above for a detailed comparison of the free version and the two premium versions.

what we like
  • Every smart prediction is customizable.

  • Includes a wealth of additional weather details.

  • Really easy to understand.

what we don't like
  • Includes advertising.

After using Weather Underground for a while, it’s safe to say that it’s a great choice, but its smart forecasts are what set it apart. Select a variety of weather conditions (such as rain, wind, temperature, and air pollution) that you think are suitable for a specific outdoor task, and the app will show you when is the best time to go out and perform that task.

Billing itself as "the world's most accurate weather service, for any microclimate," this is the perfect app if you need to know exactly when you can do something. This includes biking, running, stargazing, walking, outdoor photography, hiking, kite flying, and more.

For example, if you enjoy biking but want to avoid high winds, heavy rain, and temperatures above 80 degrees, you can create your own forecast based on those specific conditions. You'll know the exact time of day and which of the following days are best for cycling.

WU collects data from hundreds of thousands of personal weather stations around the world. It includes an interactive map with different views for temperature, radar, satellite, severe weather warnings, heat maps, webcams, hurricanes, and more.

At the very top of the app is your current location, with a radar preview and an outlook for today's weather - current high and low temperatures and the "feels like" temperature.

As you scroll down the app, you'll see 10-day daily and hourly weather forecasts, a quick view of the day's temperature map, then today's Air Quality Index, smart forecasts, weather videos, health information (UV index) and influenza risk), webcams, and finally hurricane and tropical cyclone information.

You can edit any of these tiles to hide content you're not interested in. Weather Underground also lets you move tiles to place them where you want, such as placing more important tiles closer to the top.

The app is free for iOS and Android users, but you can pay to remove ads and get extra features like smart forecasts and extended hourly forecasts.

what we like
  • Details about the storm.

  • Multiple layer options on interactive maps.

  • Runs smoothly.

  • Free 15-day forecast.

what we don't like
  • Show ads.

It's important to have a quality app to track the details of severe storms, and The Weather Channel's Storm Radar is the app for it. Its maps are highly detailed and show exactly where the storm is expected to go and when.

Even if you're not watching the map live, Storm Radar will send you push notifications at the right time to alert you of approaching dangerous storms.

The weather maps included in Storm Radar are highly customizable, allowing you to choose exactly which elements to display. My wife (who hates storms) loves this because she can use it to track earthquakes or weather from radar, satellite, severe weather alerts, temperatures, local storm reports, storm tracks, temperature changes, hurricanes/tropical storms, and road weather choose.

If you click on a storm to track, you'll get a complete analysis that includes a wealth of information you don't normally see in weather apps. You can see the heat storm index, tornado impact, hail impact, high wind impact, flood impact, mixed layer CAPE, mixed layer CIN, mixed layer uplift index, wind speed changes, freezing height, albedo, hail probability, and some other specific details.

The map in Storm Radar not only shows you the storm from a few hours ago and how it moved to where it is now, but even its projected path over the next six hours.

Even though the app is packed with details, it's very easy to use. Just click on any location on the map and you'll instantly get a box popping up with weather information for that location; click on the star and it'll be added to your list of favorite locations where you can get severe weather alerts and/or or precipitation warning and lightning warning notifications.

I highly recommend this app, I just wish it was still available for Android. You can get Storm Radar for iOS for free, but it comes with ads. To remove them and get other features like full-screen functionality, lightning tracking, and an advanced radar layer, you can pay a few dollars per month.

what we like
  • It's very simple to use, yet still informative.

  • Supports dozens of countries.

what we don't like
  • The free version contains ads.

  • Updates are infrequent.

Whether you enjoy boating, surfing, or just hanging out at the beach, Tides Near Me is the best app to know when high and low tides are in advance.

Select a country, city and tide station and you'll get up-to-date information on the last tide and the next tide, as well as tidal conditions for the rest of the week, as well as a map of tide stations around the city to compare information between them.

Unlike some weather apps that have multiple uses, this one is really only good for checking high and low tides. In addition to this, you can also view sunset and moonrise times for each day of the week.

Tides Near Me is free for iOS and Android, but is also available as an ad-free app for just a few dollars.

what we like
  • Includes every 14,000-foot peak in Colorado.

  • Displays hourly weather information.

what we don't like
  • Some features are only available for a fee.

  • US locations only.

OpenSummit is the perfect app for hiking. Its basic functionality is free and displays weather for more than 1,000 locations across the United States.

You can search for peaks by name or browse the map. Add the mountain to your bucket list and keep an eye on weather conditions.

The app includes precipitation (rain and snow), lightning (low, moderate, or high probability), temperature, and wind conditions (sustained, gusty, or >30 mph) for the current and next day.

One interesting thing about this app that I haven't seen in other weather apps is the ability to connect to Instagram to see the latest photos taken near each location. You can also read safety tips to learn more about hiking best practices, nutrition, and more.

As of now, only US locations are supported, but they plan to add thousands of international locations.

It's completely free for Android and iOS, but OpenSummit All-Access allows access to more features, such as 5-day hourly forecasts and map layers.

what we like
  • Very comprehensive.

  • Not difficult to use.

  • One month free.

what we don't like
  • Requires a lot of storage space.

  • Subscriptions are expensive.

  • Not available for Android phones.

ForeFlight is the perfect weather app for pilots because the entire focus is around flights. Plan your route and you'll instantly see if your flight will be affected by weather threats or temporary flight restrictions.

For accurate results, you can describe the exact aircraft used for your flight. When you do this, the app will automatically download weight and balance information from the FAA, which is helpful if you need to know weight limits.

You can also import custom KML files into this weather app to overlay on the map, plus create user waypoints, build pre-flight checklists, and access logs to store and share flights, currency information, hours, experience reports, and more .

The app also provides terminal procedure charts, live moving maps with multiple layer options, hazard awareness, Jeppesen charts, support for avionics and portable ADS-B and GPS receivers, and decoded METAR, TAF and MOS forecast.

It only works on iPhone and iPad. It's free for 30 days, but to continue using it you must subscribe to ForeFlight; individual prices range from $120 to $360/year.
