You may have seen the buzz surrounding Samsung's suite of Galaxy AI software features, which launched with the Galaxy S24 in January 2024 and are now showing up on older devices as well - some of which even date back to the Galaxy S21. Not all old phones have all the features.
If you're wondering what's included and how all these features can help you on your phone, the guide below should help. There's everything from advanced photo editing to real-time translation tools, all accessible through software built into your Galaxy phone - just make sure you're running OneUI 6.1 or higher before looking for these features.
Circle search
Circle to Search is a visual search tool powered by Google Lens: Searching using image cues is nothing new, but this feature makes it easier and more straightforward than ever. Just circle something on the screen and the search will start - that's it.
First, make sure Loop Search is enabled via Display > Navigation Bar in Settings. Then, in any of your favorite apps, press and hold the Home button at the bottom of the screen to launch Circle Search. If you use gestures instead of buttons to navigate Android, press and hold on the thin navigation handle (it's a little harder to hit accurately).
The screen will take on a slight tint and you can then draw around whatever you want to search for - whether it's a line of text or a graphic. Results pop up at the bottom of the screen, and you can modify your search as needed.
BuildEdit
Generative Edit is the name of the generative photo editing tool you'll find if you open the Gallery app on your Samsung phone: To make sure it's enabled and see an explanation of how it works, head to Settings and select Advanced features ” > Advanced Intelligence > Photo Editor .
In the Gallery app, tap an image, then tap the edit icon (pen symbol) and you may see some AI editing suggestions overlaid on top of the picture - just tap to apply. You can also click on the blue and white Generate AI button with a few stars on it (left): circle or click on the object you want to operate on, which can be anything from a person to a flower pot. The AI will try to select it so this works best for objects that are different from the background. Then click on the selection to use it.
You can use the eraser button above the selection to completely remove it from the image, or you can drag the object to a different location in the photo. Using some AI magic, the app will try to fill in the space left by the object, using clues from the rest of the image to figure out what the background will look like.
Chat assistance
When it comes to Samsung Keyboard, the chat assistant can work across multiple apps, giving you artificial intelligence to help tone your messages and even translate them into other languages if needed. From Settings, go to Advanced features > Advanced Smart > Samsung Keyboard to enable this feature.
Then, open an app that the chat assistant can use, such as Messages or Gmail. After entering some text, click the AI button - the button with several stars on it, located on the far left side of the toolbar above the keyboard. You'll see options for writing style, spelling and grammar, and (if relevant) chat translation.
The options are fairly self-explanatory. For example, select "Writing Style" and you'll get a number of AI-generated variations on the text you enter: Click the "Show All" button (top right) to select your desired writing tone (available options include "Professional" ”, “professional” , “professional”). Casual , polite ).
On-site translation and interpretation
Another way Samsung Galaxy AI can help is by translating between languages over the phone or in an app. From Settings, go to Advanced features > Advanced intelligence and tap Phone or Interpreter to enable and configure features as needed.
You can enable real-time translation during a call by tapping Call Assistance and then Real-time Translation on the call screen - the app will use the language configured in settings. When you speak, you see text translations on the screen and hear spoken translations, so you have to slow down the conversation to make it work.
An interpreter is similar, but it works when you're face-to-face with other people. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to enter Quick Settings, then tap Interpreter (you may need to swipe left or right to see the icon). When you or someone else wants to speak, use the on-screen microphone icon and use the drop-down menu to select the correct language.
Other Galaxy AI features
These are the most prominent Galaxy AI features, but there are others - again, they're all configurable via Advanced features > Advanced intelligence in Settings. In Samsung Notes, for example, there's a note assist button above the keyboard that can instantly summarize or format your notes for you.
Meanwhile, in the Voice Recorder app, when you select a recording, a Transcription Assistance feature appears that lets you convert speech to text in multiple languages. In Samsung Internet Browser, look for the small browsing assist button (the star icon on the bottom toolbar), which summarizes web pages for you.
Finally, there are AI-generated wallpapers, which you can use if you need to change your home screen background and don't want to hunt for images. Press and hold a blank area of the home screen, select Wallpaper & Style > Change Wallpaper > Generate , and then follow the on-screen prompts.
