Twitter.com is now X.com (at least for some of us)

Twitter changed its name to "X" as early as July 2023. While the site has slowly adapted to a new name and logo over the past 10 months, two things have remained the same: We all still call it "Twitter," and the site's URL is still twitter.com.

Times do seem to be changing, though: starting today, twitter.com is officially renamed x.com. Elon Musk confirmed the shift in a post (formerly a Tweet) on X (formerly Twitter):

However, although Musk said that "all core systems are now on X.com," it seems that is not the case for everyone. For example, when I open twitter.com purely out of unwavering habit, the site loads instantly without redirects. To me, it's still Twitter, even if it's just the URL. (The X logo is still very much fixed at the top of the page, which I think is at least better than Doge.)

On the other hand, if I enter the new x.com domain, it loads fine. It even promoted my visit to x.com itself, with a banner thanking me for checking out the new URL. The website does seem to want to encourage me to continue visiting x.com rather than twitter.com, although the latter should automatically redirect to the former.

I'm sure that once the backbone of X figures out how to force the Twitter URL to be the X URL, that will be the case until the site runs out of money and goes out of business. Personally, I think typing x.com is not only stupid, but it feels like I'm about to visit a very different kind of website - which is probably right, at this point, given the type of bots that have plagued X lately .

If you're like me and are tired of X stuff, there are plenty of alternatives to X to check out. Maybe I'll see you there, but I might still be here, helplessly typing twitter.com into my browser until the end of time.
