iPhone 15 adds USB-C, Dynamic Island, 48MP and beautiful colors

Apple is bringing some of the best features of the iPhone 14 Pro series into its more affordable phones.

USB-C iPhones have arrived.

Apple launched the iPhone 15 today at its "Wonderlust" event in Cupertino, California. As expected, the company ditched the internal Lightning connector in favor of USB-C, and both new iPhone 15 models feature the new port. For consumers, this means it will be easier to connect the new iPhone to many different devices, including Apple's own MacBook computers. However, this also means that older Lightning accessories won't work with the iPhone 15 without an adapter. Conveniently, the move to USB-C also means the new iPhones comply with upcoming EU regulations aimed at limiting e-waste.

Like the iPhone 14 series, Apple will offer 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch versions of the iPhone 15, with the latter retaining the "Plus" branding of last year's model. New to the iPhone 15 is the dynamic island display cutout that Apple will launch in 2022. Previously, this feature was only available on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple also equipped the iPhone 15 with a new Super Retina OLED screen that can display HDR content at a brightness of 1,600 nits. In sunny conditions, the new screen has a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits, twice as bright as the iPhone 14 display. The two new iPhone 15 models also feature Apple's A16 Bionic chip, which the company first introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro last year. Apple is also promising "all-day" battery life on its latest mainstream smartphone, thanks to a larger battery.

For photographers, the iPhone 15 offers a new main camera array that includes a 48-megapixel main sensor and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens. If this sounds familiar, that's because Apple went with 48 megapixels on the iPhone 14. For selfie experts, the iPhone 15's front-facing camera features autofocus and portrait lighting.

The company will offer the new phone in a range of delightful colors: black, green, yellow, pink and blue. Apple will begin accepting pre-orders for the iPhone 15 this Friday (September 15) and will be generally available in September. iPhone 15 starts at $799. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Plus starts at $899.

Separately, Apple announced that iOS 17, the next version of its mobile operating system, will be released as a free update on Monday, September 18. The company has been publicly testing the new software since it first previewed iOS 17 on its website in June. The annual WWDC conference. The update will bring a slew of new features, including a redesigned call screen that users can customize to their liking and a check-in feature that will alert trusted contacts when you've arrived safely at your destination. ).
