This article explains how to enable Gmail sound notifications using the Gmail Notifier extension for Chrome. It includes information to enable pop-up notifications for Gmail and sound notifications for other email providers.

If you want to hear the sound of new email messages while using Gmail in a desktop web browser, you can do that, but not within Gmail itself.

Because Gmail doesn't support push sound notifications through your web browser, you must install a third-party program such as Notifier for Gmail (Chrome extension).

If you use the Notifier for Gmail Chrome extension:

  1. Select Extensions next to Chrome's navigation bar, then select More Actions (three vertical dots) and select Options .

  2. Scroll down to the Notifications section and make sure Play alert sound for new emails is selected.

  3. Use the drop-down menu to change the sound.

  4. Exit the window when finished. Changes are saved automatically.

You can also change the notification sound on Android or change the new message sound on iOS to achieve a similar effect in these mobile apps.

If you use Gmail through a downloadable email client, such as Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, or eM Client, you can change the sound in those programs.

You can set Gmail to show a pop-up notification when a new email arrives in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari when you sign in to Gmail and open it in your browser. Just select the Settings icon, then select View all settings and go to General > Desktop notifications to open this setting in Gmail. This notification is not accompanied by a sound.

You can turn on notification sounds for Outlook emails using the Play Sound option in the Message Arrivals section in the File > Options > Mail menu. To change the sound, open Control Panel and search for "Sounds." Open the Sound Control Panel applet and modify the new mail notification options from the Sound tab.

Mozilla Thunderbird users can change the new mail alert noise through a similar process.

For other email clients, look somewhere in the Settings or Options menu. If the audio format of your notification sound is not suitable for this program, remember to use an audio file converter.
