Fashion girls all know that no one is better at making handbags than Gucci. From traditional models like the Jackie and Diana bags (named after Jackie Onassis Kennedy and Princess Diana respectively) to more recent launches like the Dionysus or the recently relaunched Attaché, the Italian brand has several bags. It has been a favorite for ten years.
But one style in particular typifies Gucci's successful (and whimsical) rebranding under former creative director Alessandro Michele. It's also dominated much of the past decade, becoming the brand's most famous design. I’m talking about none other than the herringbone style quilting darling – Marmont.
Just as the Dionysus bag, inspired by Greek mythology, exploded in popularity after Michele launched it in 2015, the Marmont achieved similar success after debuting in 2016. Celebrities and influencers from Margot Robbie to Kendall Jenner immediately embraced the accessory, cementing it as a timeless wardrobe staple for the fashion elite.
In fact, industry experts say it's now "the most well-known" of Gucci products. Fashionphile website marketing expert Landyn Tedrick called the bag an "instant classic" in a previous interview with Bustle. "The GG Marmont Matelassé handbag features the brand's classic Matelassé stitching and large GG lettering. It may be the most well-known Gucci handbag currently on the market."
While the popularity of It bags tends to fade (fashion is cyclical, after all), the Marmont's appeal endures. In 2018, it became the best-selling bag on Net-a-Porter. In 2021, it was included in the Gucci Beloved campaign, effectively cementing its place among the ranks of other "beloved" heritage styles such as the Jackie and Horsebit, which have also been included in the campaign. Serena Williams and comedian Awkwafina both riffed on the quilted style during James Corden's stand-up style campaign.
Countless other A-listers have also been spotted wearing the accessory, including Elle Fanning, Busy Philipps and Salma Hayek, who Salma Hayek has been wearing this accessory long before she appeared in House of Gucci . Even Dakota Johnson, who endorses Gucci bags, has been spotted carrying Marmont bags many times.
While the rectangular flap accessory is undoubtedly the most popular Marmont style, the complete Marmont collection also features several other designs to suit any bag lover's preferences. Choose your favorite from bucket bags, cross-body camera bags or even handbags.
Luckily for shoppers, new iterations and colorways are releasing regularly, including limited editions with embroidery, special hardware and even pearls. For example, a recent collaboration with Adidas featured the athletic brand’s trefoil logo throughout.
Most designs are crafted from matelassé chevron leather, but flap styles are also available in exotic leathers such as tweed, velvet and python. All products feature a sliding chain strap that can be used as a longer crossbody bag or shoulder bag.
The flip-top Marmont model sells for $2,190 for a mini bag and up to $5,000 for a bag in more luxurious materials, while other styles sell for $1,190 for a bucket bag and $3,300 for a top handle bag. Protect yours below.
