Taco Bell just started testing crispy chicken wings in select locations

Taco Bell's menu always sticks to its theme. As a Tex-Mex restaurant chain, the company excels in tacos, quesadillas and burritos. It wasn't until two years ago that the chain decided to add French fries to its menu. So when customers heard that the fast-food chain was testing a new, unorthodox menu item, it was a big deal. Brace yourself: Taco Bell is testing crispy chicken wings.

Before you jump in your car and make a quick trip to your nearest Taco Bell drive-thru, these crispy wings are only available at one location in Fullerton, California. Popular food and drink blog Foodbeast spotted the wings being sold in boxes of five with "bold Mexican seasoning" and ranch on the side, all for $4.99.

The new addition of wings surprised many, especially considering that in late July, Taco Bell announced that it would be eliminating some classic items from its menu, including the Grilled Steak Soft Taco, Seven-Layer Burrito, Nachos Supreme, and Beef Tacos Pancakes, spicy tostadas, triple nachos, spicy potato soft tacos, cheesy fiesta potatoes, grill, chips and dip, and mini skillet bowls. The removal of most of the items comes as Taco Bell looks to simplify orders during the coronavirus pandemic.

Heather Mottershaw, Taco Bell's vice president of product development, told Forbes that Taco Bell is going through a "menu evolution," and the discontinuation of older products will leave room for some new ones. It looks like if all goes well, crispy chicken wings could become a new favorite among Taco Bell customers. However, not everyone feels this way. When Twitter got word that chicken wings might be added to Taco Bell's menu, many users expressed reluctance to try them. Some even make fun of anyone who might think of doing so.

It's unclear whether crispy wings will make it out of Fullerton, but regardless, the prospect of the staple fast-food chain changing its menu in unprecedented ways is sure to generate some excitement.
