Thankfully, vegan favorites for everyday snacks are becoming more and more common. As events such as Veganuary grow in popularity, brands have realized that people like to choose to buy vegan. The latest to join the movement? Nestlé has launched KitKat, the ultimate plant-based snack, and you can buy vegan KitKat in the UK.
Back in February, Nestlé revealed on the brand's Instagram that "the rumors are true," confirming that the new plant-based "KitKat V" chocolate bar will be available in multiple countries later in 2021. ..” read the article and then told fans to “watch this space…”
Well, the official launch is finally here: starting today, according to Nestlé, vegan KitKats are available to buy from Sainsbury's and other KitKat stores. Eager shoppers have been snapping up items from supermarkets, with rice-based alternatives confirmed to be on sale for £1.
According to Bloomberg, KitKat V will ditch the dairy-based chocolate commonly found in bars in favor of a rice-based alternative that incorporates Nestlé’s 100% sustainable cocoa. Either way, Nestlé promises the plant-based chocolate bar will still have the same "perfect balance of crunchy wafers and smooth chocolate" as the original dairy version.
“Taste was a key factor when developing plant-based chocolate for our new vegan KitKat,” said Louise Barrett, head of Nestlé’s Confectionery Product Technology Center in York. "We used our expertise in ingredients and a test-and-learn approach to create a delicious vegan alternative to our original chocolate KitKat."

Since the research and development of the vegan KitKat took place in York, the "home of KitKat", it seems likely that KitKat V will be available in the UK sooner or later. However, don't expect it to show up at your local corner store anytime soon. The plant-based chocolate bar will initially be available only through KitKat Chocolatory and selected retailers to test its popularity before launching a wider rollout. So, if you want to see this snack become a permanent fixture, you'd better buy it.
