How to Make the French Tacos You’ll See Everywhere on TikTok

Once the TikTok algorithm figures out how much you like a recipe (and it does ), you can see (and learn how to make) every popular treat the app has to offer. Is that the right person to take over? TikTok’s version of French tacos.

Although it has the word "taco" in its name, French tortillas (always plural) aren't all that similar to the famous Mexican tacos, other than being a smorgasbord of comfort food wrapped in a tortilla. But since then, the two have had differences.

In Mexican-American tacos, the tortilla is usually filled with beef or chicken, beans, vegetables, and some guacamole or sour cream if you like. With French tacos, though, anything is possible. You can fill it with meat (usually halal) and cheese, or stuff it with French fries, chicken nuggets, and a variety of condiments. In terms of ingredients, they're often reminiscent of a "fat sandwich" if you've ever had the pleasure of eating one of these.

The entire creation is then expertly folded into a rectangle and grilled. If it helps, you can also think of it as a tortilla rather than a semicircular vehicle used to carry food to your mouth. While the origins are a bit mysterious, all you really need to know is that this dish looks good— so good, in fact, that you might want to make it at home. Here's how to make French tacos, according to TikTok.

Step 1: Gather ingredients

Scroll through #Frenchtacos on TikTok, which currently has over 36 million views, and you'll see that every restaurant and home cook puts something different into their French tacos. But if you want a classic, you'll need a large tortilla, protein (chicken breast, chicken nuggets, ground beef or meat substitute), cream cheese sauce, and French fries. That's it. This is the recipe.

Step 2: Prepare

Cook the protein as normal. Do the same with veggies (although veggies don't usually appear in most French tortillas) and put them all on the tortilla. Swirl cheese sauce on top. Then put on the fries.

You may also want to squirt some Tabasco, mustard, or barbecue sauce. When it comes to making French tortillas at home, there really is no right or wrong way. Feel free to experiment with the fillings and see what you like.

Step 3: Fold it up

Once you've added all the ingredients, it's time to fold the tortilla into a square. To do this, bring the two sides of the tortilla together and tuck the ends in like you would an envelope, as shown below.

Step 4: Barbecue

Place it on the grill like a panini (it's really getting cosmopolitan here) and heat it for a few minutes until the cheese is completely melted and/or you see light grill lines. If you don't have a grill, you can also fry in a pan on the stovetop.

As mentioned in Cooking with Cali, you'll grease a skillet with butter, set the burner to low, and let the tortillas heat slowly. (This gives the inside a chance to warm without the outside burning.) Once the bottom is golden brown, flip and brown the other side.
