Picking out something to watch with the family during the holidays isn't always the easiest task, but luckily, a new Discovery+ documentary series about food, family, and travel might be just the crowd-pleaser you're looking for. José Andrés and Family in Spain follows the world-renowned chef on a gastronomic journey through his home country. In the six-part series, Andres will explore destinations such as Barcelona, Madrid and Lanzarote, learning about the local cuisine while also making time for new experiences along the way, such as paragliding or paragliding. Milk the goat.
Andres was born and raised in Spain, so he definitely didn't need any help handling the terrain. However, his three daughters - Carlotta, Ines and Lucia - who were born in the United States, will also join him. "My daughters have heard countless stories about the people, places and foods that shaped my youth, but we had the opportunity to visit, meet and taste it all together," Andres said in a statement. "There's nothing like it. What better way to learn about Spanish culture than with a fork and spoon in hand.”
Even if you're not familiar with Andres' name, you've probably eaten foods, such as tapas, that were influenced by him.
According to NPR, Andres' work at Jaleo in Washington, D.C. helped the tapas gain widespread fame in the United States while also popularizing Spanish cuisine as a whole. He is also the founder of World Central Kitchen, an organization dedicated to feeding people affected by global emergencies and natural disasters. To give you an idea of the scale, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they would be partnering with the organization in 2020.
"We need to weaponize empathy... We have an opportunity, and food is central to that," Andres told Anderson Cooper early in the pandemic. "To make sure that we actually don't just close the gap, but become stronger."
So, how to watch José Andrés and family in Spain this holiday season? The new six-part documentary series will begin streaming on Discovery+ on December 27, making it the perfect choice for the cozy, limited week leading up to New Year's Eve.
