Who does Adele sing about in "Love in the Dark"?

Adele has done it again. Is this really surprising? Adele's album 25 was released on Friday and now everyone has forgotten about work and is listening to her new music and trying to figure out who she's singing about in some of the songs. Most of the 27-year-old singer's lyrics are heartbreaking (shocking, I know) and make you really think about her past relationships. For example, who is Love in the Dark about?

These are some of the devastating lyrics Adele belts out in her songs, and I'm not sure I can handle all the emotions she feels, let alone the emotions she makes me feel. The song begins like this:

Take your eyes off me so I can leave/I'm too ashamed to let you look at me/This never ends, we've been here before/But this time I can't stay 'cause I Not loving you is no longer you/Please stay where you are/Don’t get close/Don’t try to change my mind, I’m cruel to kindness/I can’t love you in the dark/It feels like we are separated by an ocean/There is so much between us Big distance/maybe we've been defeated

so. many. Chills. So, who is she singing about? Obviously, it's about the past and deep love. You wouldn't write and sing a song like this about ordinary flying. It had to be about someone she loved very much and found it hard to leave.

As fans know, Adele is very private when it comes to her personal life, except for a few times talking about her current boyfriend Simon Konecki, who she has been with since 2011. This song (and probably a few of her other songs on 25 ) could be about her alleged ex-boyfriend, photographer Alex Sturrock. In 2012, British tabloid Heat magazine reported that Sturrock was the creator of the songs "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You" from Adele's album 21 . According to sources, they dated from 2008 to 2009, and although it only lasted about a year, Heat described the relationship as "short-lived, intense and volatile."

If that's true, I'd say even six years later, that's enough to write a lot of songs. If Adele wasn't writing about him, her song might even be about someone she dated between 2009 and 2011 (before she met Konecki). Heck, it could also be about someone from her further past. Whoever this ex is that Adele is singing about, it's clear she's moved on. As she told the Guardian in 2015,

This may sound obvious, but I think you can only learn to love again when you fall in love again. I'm in that place. My love for my man is deep and true, which allowed me to finally reach out to my ex. Let him know I'm done.

Judging from the lyrics, it seems like Adele and her mystery man have grown so distant that it's beyond repair. When you feel like you're in the dark about loving someone and can't even save the relationship, sometimes the only thing you can do is walk away. As she sang in "Love in the Dark":

We're not the only ones/I don't regret anything/Everything I say you know I always mean it/You mean the world to me in my life/But I want to live more than live just survive

Can we talk about that last line? That's some powerful stuff.

At least Adele has gotten over it and can now express her feelings through her music. Now, please forgive me while I wipe away my tears because Adele has this effect on me.
