Miley Cyrus has a lot to celebrate in 2023. Her single "Flowers" became one of the most successful hits of her career, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and helping her win six at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards nominations, including the coveted Video of the Year. However, she didn't celebrate all of these achievements at the VMAs.
Cyrus has yet to confirm that she will attend or perform at the 2023 VMA Awards, but fans are still hopeful that she will make an appearance. After all, the singer hasn't missed a VMA during one of her albums since 2013, when she wore a teddy bear bodysuit after performing the Bangerz hit "We Can't Stop." Robin Thicke is notorious for twerking. The next year, she won Video of the Year for "Wrecking Ball" and had a young man who was homeless at the time give his acceptance speech to raise awareness about homeless young people.
Cyrus hosted the 2015 VMAs, which ended with a surprise performance of her new song "Dooo It!" and announced the release of her free album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz that night. She returned in 2017 to perform the title track from her Younger Now album, again in 2019 to perform her single "Slide Away", and returned the following year to perform "Midnight" from her album Plastic Hearts Sky,” at the Big Disco is a nod to her evolution since “Wrecking Ball.”
With Cyrus not participating in promotions for "Endless Summer" , this marks the first time in 10 years that she hasn't used the VMAs to promote her project. That said, Cyrus took a decidedly relaxed approach to promoting the album, only performing her new songs during the Backyard Sessions special and choosing not to tour. She explained why in a recent TikTok video promoting "Once Upon a Time," revealing her grueling schedule as a 12-year-old starlet. "I'm a lot of things, but laziness isn't one of them," she quipped. "So I do think this girl deserves an endless summer vacation."
