Charlie Puth's 'Loser' is based on a heartbreaking real-life text message

Charlie Puth's self-titled new record "Charlie" has become a hot topic after sharing the creation of his third album with fans on TikTok . It turns out that his much-discussed song "Loser" was directly inspired by a breakup the singer still lingers with today. "The song starts with the title," Puth told Apple Music.

"I was in the shower and I thought back to a time when I felt like I'd really screwed up with someone. I thought I'd lost them forever. I felt like a loser. I'm a singer living in Los Angeles and I see Too many people and I'm a loser. "I then asked, 'How did I lose her? 'And it happens to rhyme. It sounds like a nursery rhyme that has been around forever. Just a kind of self-deprecation, sad. "

As some eagle-eyed Puthinators may have noticed, the singer first teased the beginning of the song over a year ago, sharing his creative process on TikTok. Here, Puth tells a slightly different origin story. "I was on my way to the studio right now, thinking about what song I was going to write today, and then I saw this old text message," he said, before showing off the text on his phone. During the conversation, he was discussing a recent heartbreak with a friend named Jeff (presumably his manager Jeff Azoff), then accidentally brought up the song's main content in the process. "I promise you'll forget about her...but maybe you should go to the studio," Jeff replied.

Puth, on the other hand, told Variety that the new album "Charlie" will show fans another side of his personality. "I realized that the things I was going through — breakups and all that — they were very similar to things other people were going through, and similar feelings that one person was feeling might have different colors than other things that other people were feeling," he Adding: “I wouldn’t define it as just a breakup album. I would define it as a self-reflection album of, ‘How could I let myself get so low because of someone? "album".

Regardless, the artist has confirmed that "Loser" is based directly on his real-life experiences and is about a real relationship that ended. Could this be the same breakup he refers to in the new album's opener "That's Hilarious" - the one that "took a fucking year of my life"? That remains to be seen.

Oh, I'm such a loser, how could I lose her?

Oh, maybe I must be crazy

Now, I'm a loser, why should I lose her?

I'll never recover, I'll never get better 'cause I

I'm just probably too drunk to think about us (ugh)

I didn't think about what we could have been (duh)

I'll stay up three or four nights so I don't dream about us (ugh)

I woke up with no luck (no), I just couldn't win

I should have seen it all along (Ahhh)

She's one in a million (ahhh)

Pain every time someone says her name

(someone said her name)

When we're on and off (Ahhh)

It seems I really played it wrong (ahhh)

I shouldn't have let her slip away

Oh, I'm such a loser, how could I lose her?

Oh, maybe I must be crazy

Now, I'm a loser, why should I lose her?

I'll never recover, I'll never get better 'cause I

Well, I might have gone a little too far.

When she needs someone (ugh)

Leaning against her body at 2am (wow)

Yeah, now I've been lying to myself

When she might just be kidding (She might be joking)

She might call me and we'll be us again

I should have seen it all along (Ahhh)

She's one in a million (ahhh)

Now she's in love and I'm second (damn)

Oh, I'm such a loser, how could I lose her? (lose her)

Oh, maybe I must be crazy (Now, I)

Now, I'm a loser, why should I lose her? (she)

I'll never recover, I'll never get better (well) 'cause I, uh

[post-chorus]

Oh my god, my god, my god, my god.

Oh my god, my god, my god, my god.

Oh my God, my God, my God, I'm a loser (I said)

Oh my god, my god, my god, my god.

Oh my God, my God, my God, my God (me)

Oh my god, my god, my god, I'm a loser.

tell me god is real

do you still miss me

Or am I living for nothingness?

don't know where it went

Wrong but I'll take the hint

needs some adjustments

Oh, I'm such a loser, how could I lose her?

Oh, maybe I must be crazy

Now, I'm a loser (oh), why did I lose her? (I never)

I'll never recover, I'll never get better (Oh, baby, me)

Because I'm a loser

Oh my god, my god, my god, my god.

Oh my god, my god, my god, my god.

Oh my God, my God, my God, I'm a loser (I said)

Oh my, my, my, my (oh, I said)

Oh my God, my God, my God, my God (yes, I said it)

Oh my god, my god, my god, I'm a loser.
