In the early 2000s, Hilary Duff said you could change your clothes if you wanted to, but what the then-teenage star didn't know was that they might not stay in your past forever, As you wish. As Duff looked back on her younger pop-rock years to mark the 20th birthday of her 2003 single "So Yesterday," she hilariously shared her surprise at the resurgence of one of the era-specific trends she rocked in the music video. Controversial project? Studded belt.
Duff took a trip down memory lane after Betches posted a story on Instagram about the 20th anniversary of "So Yesterday." "How old are we?!" reads the text on a clip from the song's music video. The story also added context, "@hilaryduff's 'So Yesterday' came out 20 years ago and we'll be wearing mini denim skirts, studded belts and slingback pumps to commemorate it."
Duff reposted the video to her own Story, and the How I Met Your Mother star then addressed her fashion at the time in a second post. Her addition included a photo of a variety of studded belts on display at a clothing store, showing off what appeared to be her hands. "OMG how come these things are back," she wrote underneath the photo, adding a palm emoji above it.
While Duff may no longer like some of the trends she embraced as a teenager, there's no doubt they influenced young Millennials in their formative years. Of course, thanks to her and her sassy Disney character Lizzie Maguire, many of us wanted to spend our teenage years decked out in colorful camo, bandanas, and embellished jeans. If young people today want to do the same thing, why not (take a crazy opportunity)?
Interestingly, it wasn't just her old fashion choices that came back to haunt Duff in her adult life. During a 2022 appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden , she revealed that "someone played old teen bop music for her daughter." She explained that her daughter loved it so much that she asked Duff to "play it Putting it in her car, like turning it up to full volume," the mother-of-three said, adding that they were "deeply hurt by Hilary Duff," adding that it was "too much. It’s terrible.”
Still, Duff admired many parts of her early career and revisited some of them quite intentionally and willingly. In addition to trying to reboot Lizzie Maguire for Disney, she's also bringing back a scene from the beloved show for her latest series , How I Met Your Mother . On the other hand, if a studded belt becomes outdated for her, she has no control over it.
