Colin and Penelope get awkward in Bridgerton Season 3 clip

Bridgerton Season 3 is still a few months away, but as an early Valentine's Day gift, Netflix released the first clip from Colin and Penelope's love story on February 1. Yes, you'll be hooked.

#Polin's debut is part of the streamer's Next on Netflix campaign, but it's not the only teaser. Bridgerton will host a sneak peek event on February 14, offering the opportunity to get an up-close look at the new season and conduct Q&A with the series stars and creative team.

But first, let's break down the 30-second clip, which gave fans "a lot" to talk about.

Gazing at the sweetness of the soul

In new footage, Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) stare stubbornly at each other in the Bridgerton family's living room. Their staring contest went on for a long time, until Penelope's comment broke the tense silence: "Your eyes... are the most striking blue," she said. “But somehow they shine brighter when you’re kind.”

A visibly flustered Colin was about to respond when Penelope concluded: "If you were the suitor, I'd probably say something like that."

"Well, that's pretty straightforward," Colin replied.

Bridgerton readers may notice the reference to Colin's eyes. In The Romance of Mr. Bridgerton, his eyes are described as "devastating" and "the kind of eyes that haunt a girl's dreams".

It's a Toll This scene sets the tone for Colin and Penelope's journey in season three. According to Netflix, Colin was "eager to win back Penelope's friendship" after teasing her friends last season. So he tried to compensate by coaching Pan "in a confident manner" so she could find a match.

Romantic comedy fans know this is obviously not going to go as planned. "When his lessons start to work a little too well," the official synopsis continues, "Colin must grapple with the question of whether his feelings for Penelope are really just friendly." (If this sneak peek of the tension is anything to go by signs, then they are certainly not ).

Bridgerton Extras

It's been nearly two years since Bridgerton Season 2 (but it feels like '84), so it's understandable that fans are excited about the #Polin crumbs Netflix has shared. Luckily, there's another one! In Netflix's Next overall preview, which teases clips from the streamer's upcoming movies and TV shows, about 18 seconds of Colin and Penelope appeared. It only lasts a moment, but it's a nighttime scene where Colin and Penelope are alone and they look troubled.

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope, told Entertainment Tonight Last year, Season 3 had "spicy" content to look forward to - despite the awkwardness of filming a friends-turned-lovers romance with her real-life friends. "One day we had to do, like, a really romantic, beautifully written romance scene," she said. "We were like pissing ourselves laughing because you just look into each other's eyes and we're like, 'Oh my God.'"
