The hidden meaning behind Taylor Swift's new tortured poet dress

Taylor Swift is giving her history-making Eras tour a complete makeover — and not just in the setlist. The singer updated her outfits for the show, donning new sparkly leotards for the "Lover" and "Midnights" eras, pastel princess gowns for her performance of "Speak Now" and "Fearless" Donned a glittering fringed outfit.

However, her most eye-catching look was her new look. Swift added another performance to the show, which included songs from her new album The Tortured Poets Department , and with it came a new dress that perfectly captured her current era. In typical Swift fashion, there's also a hidden Easter egg built into the dress.

Swift's Tortured Poet Dress

After leading the crowd to the tortured poet department, Swift took the stage wearing a custom Vivienne Westwood gown. The dress features a white bodice and waistline that meets a matching high-low skirt that has newspaper-style text written all over it. The skirt is pleated into a knot at the seams, creating a wide-leg slit.

Swift's color choice further proves a common theory that white is the official color of the Tormented Poet Division era, as shown in the album's visuals. In this performance, she also performs using a white microphone. (Singers designed different microphones to suit the aesthetics of each era.)

Swift completed her look with custom red-soled lace sneaker pumps by Christian Louboutin, who designs all of her Eras Tour shoes.

hidden meaning

Swift's dress had the words "I love you and it ruins my life" repeated in cursive script. As Swifties know, this line is the main melody of Tormented Poet 's single "Fortnight," a collaboration with Post Malone. The song tells the story of infidelity that almost resulted in the murder of two lovers, and the lyrics represent how her forbidden love greatly affected her happiness.

Fans are used to Swift sneaking Easter eggs into her closet. Even her look at the 2024 Grammy Awards gave a glimpse of the ripped gown she wore in the "Fortnight" music video. It's only fitting that the singer continues this tradition on the Eras tour.
