Jacob Elordi faces criticism for kissing booth comedy while hosting 'SNL'

Jacob Elordi may have known he had "made it" in Hollywood from the moment he heard a candle smelled like his bathwater. If he needs reassurance, he can also check out his latest gig. Elordi hosted Saturday Night Live on Jan. 20, giving him and the SNL writers a chance to discuss the highs and lows of his career to date.

A "disgusting" movie

Elordi opened the show with multiple jokes about his much-hyped psychological thriller Saltburn , including its TikTok appeal. However, after only about a minute, he claimed that he was "not very good at public speaking" and decided to take questions from the audience. It soon became apparent that these were not ordinary viewers and these were not ordinary questions. Instead, viewers saw a series of awkward interactions with SNL writers and stars.

One particularly funny moment occurred when Sarah Sherman took the opportunity to address Elodie. "Just wanted to say, I saw your movie and I thought it was absolutely disgusting," she told him. He understands and admits that Saltburn isn't for everyone, but - twist! -That's not the movie she wanted.

"What the hell is salt burn?" Sherman responded. "I'm talking about the kissing booth . Two people kissing on the mouth? Bullshit."

Kissing booth sunshades

The moment seemed like a silly nod to the fact that Elordi himself belittled the three-movie Netflix romantic comedy series that launched his career. It wasn't the kiss on the mouth that bothered him; Instead, he admits to finding them superficial.

"I'm a purist and love movie theaters, so I had this weird moral battle of, 'What am I aiding and abetting? Am I a representative of this new age of scary robots? Am I murdering the people I love?' Something?'" he told Vanity Fair in late 2020. "But there's this mentality of, 'I'm going to do whatever it takes to get to America and do what I love.'"

Most recently, Elordi was heavily criticized for telling GQ in December 2023 that the Kissing Booth movie was "ridiculous." "Before I made these movies, I didn't want to make these movies," he said. In response, his co-star Joey King told Variety that "it's unfortunate for anyone to feel that way," and some fans called him "ungrateful."

Handsome Guy SNL

In addition to the "kissing booth" jokes, SNL also had fun poking fun at Elordi's Hollywood heartthrob status. When SNL writer Alex English asked the question, he greeted him with "Hi, baby girl" and then asked him to choose his favorite version of Elvis. Then writer Rosebud Baker pursued his question with a fierce gaze. "No problem. Just wanted to see you," she said. That was before the sketch started. Elodie continues to dazzle a group of aspiring actors, inadvertently seduces attendees of a female AA meeting, steals crowns from some short kings, and more.

With one episode of Saturday Night Live already off the air in 2024, Elordi is arguably the host of the year right now. Watch the full monologue below.

Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30 pm ET on NBC.
