When you block a number on your Android phone, your phone won't ring when that person calls you, but the caller can still leave a voicemail. The only way to stop people from leaving voicemails is to use an app that marks blocked numbers as spam. Your choice depends on your phone carrier.

If you're an AT&T customer, you can use the AT&T ActiveArmor app (formerly Call Protect) for free. The service automatically blocks known spam numbers, and you can block specific numbers from leaving voicemails.

This app works on phones running at least Android 7 purchased through AT&T.

Verizon users can temporarily block up to 5 numbers for free. The block must be reapplied after 90 days. Sign in to My Verizon to do this.

To permanently block calls and voicemails for up to 20 numbers, sign up for the Verizon Smart Family plan. This is a paid service, and you can also block numbers and restrict data, calls, and text messages during certain times of the day. Download the Verizon Smart Family Parent app to get started.

T-Mobile customers can block scam calls with the Scam Shield app. While the app is free, you have to pay for the premium version to block voicemails from specific numbers.

You get call control for free, but you have to pay for a subscription to take full advantage of the service, such as blocking any number of numbers and automatically blocking tens of thousands of unwanted callers.

It is possible to forward voice calls to a number provided by your carrier, but this method only works if you are using Voice as your primary number, as people can still leave voicemails when they call you directly.
