There are many ways to find interesting books to read, perhaps on a Kindle or Kobo. Thanks to BookTok and BookTube, you can receive book suggestions even when you're not looking for a book.
But just because a book influencer is talking about a book doesn’t mean you’ll like it or even want to read it. Thankfully, there's another way: join an online book club.
Join a book club with the Fables app
Fable (available for iPhone and Android) is a place where readers come together to discuss their favorite books. It's an all-in-one platform where you can track books, buy them, read them with other book club members, and discuss them in a forum-like interface redesigned for smartphones.
But most importantly, you'll find a ton of book clubs here, some very niche and some more mainstream, all run by real, passionate readers. A good book club based on genre or theme can both help you discover books you want to read and help you get into the habit of actually reading those recommended books.
Amazon Kindle PaperwhiteThe Book Club in Fable selects a book to read each month, voted on by the book club members themselves. You can join any book club you want, or you can join multiple book clubs. The app search feature can also help you narrow down to specific types. For example, I'm really into cozy fantasy right now, and Fables is an easy way to find some fun book clubs and picks.
The core of the Fable interactive experience can be found in the Discussion and Schedule sections. The club lobby is a chat room for the entire group, where you get a Discord-style chat room for everyone in the club to contribute and ask questions, discuss books, and select upcoming books. The sections below are defined by book club owners and can be used to discuss specific chapters or sections of the book.
If you're not the kind of person who enjoys discussing books, you may still find value in the Fables Book Club because of its timeline feature. Here, book club owners can set progress and milestones for the book to help you stay on track. Milestones (for example, complete Chapter 6 by May 10) are only suggestions—you are free to read at your own pace.
Storygraph is a Goodreads book club app
Storygraph has earned a reputation as the antithesis of Goodreads. The app is ad-free and works independently. Additionally, it has a half-star feature that provides more granular ratings, and reviews are much more detailed than those in Goodreads. Now, Storygraph has added a book club. You can now run or join a book club directly from the website or app.
Storygraph natively supports picking books and voting. The book with the most votes will be selected, and the book club manager can create a meeting to discuss the book or a specific portion of it. There is also a forum interface where people can discuss the book and ask questions.
While the book club feature is live, it has not yet been added to the main website. You can join and create book clubs, but it's all through a link. You can't search for book clubs like you can in Fable, but that shouldn't stop you from exploring. This Reddit super thread has lots of great Storygraph book clubs to join.
Find book clubs on Discord
On Discord, you can find a community for anything, including books. You can use the Book Clubs tab on the Disboard website to find all publicly listed Discord servers related to book clubs. If you are looking for a specific type, use the Search field. Discord book clubs are organized by channels, and they're a great place to discover and discuss books with like-minded people.
Join in-person and online book clubs through the book club website
The Book Club website is dedicated to virtual and in-person book clubs. Here you can find hundreds of clubs that meet monthly in person. If you don't have one around you, don't worry: you can still join the online group for monthly meetings. There are also clubs that also do not hold virtual meetings, preferring to use the website's forums for discussions.
