Many apps and websites have dark modes these days, and it would be a bit jarring if they didn't. While most of Google's products offer dark mode (Gmail offers a ton of customizable themes), the company continues to offer light mode to users of many web apps. That is, at least for now: Google Drive has a dark mode, friends.
According to Android Police, Google has been working on this rollout for about a month, starting with a limited version. However, it should be rolling out to all users starting on Tuesday, although it may take until May 1 for all users to see it. As part of the rollout, Google will alert users to the change with a pop-up that reads "New! Dark Mode: Keep enjoying driving in the dark." When you receive the pop-up, you'll be able to easily change the Drive theme from Light to Dark , or to Device , which will set the Drive's theme to what your computer is currently set to.
However, depending on when you read this article, you might not see this pop-up, and, without it, you might never know that Google Drive actually added Dark Mode as a feature. That's because when you use Drive, there's no obvious dark mode toggle or option like with some web apps. If you want to find this option, you'll need to click the settings cog at the top of the page, tap Settings , and then look for Appearance . Here you'll find the same three theme options as the popup: Light , Dark , and Device default .
Google Drive for mobile has been matched to your system's theme. You can change this option in the settings menu of the Google Drive app on Android, while on iOS Drive will always match your system theme. This is fine for people like me who use light mode during the day and dark mode at night, but it would be nice if Drive users on iPhone had some control.
Now that Google Drive won't blind us when we access files at night, it's nice to see some other Google apps joining the fray. It would be nice if I could check my schedule on Google Calendar, or type some notes in Google Docs using the same dark theme as my computer.
