Includes private messaging capabilities.
Excellent spam protection.
Includes 15 GB of space for email and other files.
Tightly integrated with other Google services.
Dealing with folders/labels can be confusing.
It's probably no surprise that Gmail tops the list. I've been using Google's free email service for many years. It has a modern feel, is tightly integrated with the company's other services, and does a good job of blocking spam.
It also has some other nifty features, such as the option to send emails later, schedule emails to be sent in the future, and read messages offline. You can also send emails that expire and require a unique code to open, store messages in a 15 GB vault, share files from a cloud storage account, undo sending messages, and set holiday responses. Google's Gemini service is even built-in (if you choose to opt in).
I like how closely Gmail ties into the company's other products. This means I can use my account to collaborate with people on projects or hold virtual meetings.
There are themes you can apply to your Gmail interface to customize the way it appears and make it feel more like your space. Some other features I like include access to a ton of advanced settings, the ability to create filters and labels, and the option to import emails from other email accounts. There are also gadgets (add-ons) that extend the functionality of Gmail.
All addresses end with gmail.com .

what we likeThe interface is clean and easy to use.
Works closely with other Microsoft services.
Automatically organize emails.
Multiple account aliases hide your actual email address.
Sometimes it takes a while to load.
Display giant banner ads.
Outlook is Microsoft's free email service and, like Gmail, has a reliable interface that's easy to navigate. In my experience, it's easily second only to Google's service and even tied for the best free email provider.
The website is intuitive; just right-click on an email to easily find further options, including moving and deleting messages and searching every email from that sender.
Outlook supports mail rules, which means you can set new mail to automatically move to a specified folder and have it categorized, flagged, or forwarded when certain conditions are met. You can also connect directly to Skype via email and use add-ons like DocuSign.
All of Microsoft's other products are seamlessly integrated through Outlook. You can easily access OneNote, Excel, Word, Calendar, and more directly from your email.
Your address can end with Outlook.com or hotmail.com (yes, it still exists!).

03 out of 10proton mail
what we likeRely heavily on encrypted email data.
Send encrypted emails to anyone, even if they don't use Proton Mail.
Select an expiration time for emails.
Storage space is limited to 1 GB.
Free accounts can send up to 150 messages per day.
No reply during the holidays.
Only three folders and tags are supported.
Free users have limited scheduling options.
The main difference between Proton Mail and other services is that this service is centered around email encryption. The idea is that you can send a message without having to worry about the people at Proton Mail or anyone else other than the recipient being able to read the message.
Messages sent to other Proton Mail users are always encrypted. You can also encrypt messages sent to non-users. I like the selection here. If you encrypt a message, you can set an expiration time (up to four weeks) so that after a specified duration the message will be destroyed and unreadable!
Recipients of encrypted emails open the email via a link asking for a password, which is decrypted and displayed in the browser. They can reply via the encrypted channel with the same message they decrypted, and no Proton Mail account is required.
I like that Proton Mail includes free encryption, but 1 GB is pretty low for email storage (you actually start with 500 MB; the rest you can unlock for free). The daily mail limit doesn't seem like a big deal, at least not to me, but if you're a heavy email user, you'll definitely feel the limitation.
Another privacy-focused feature is link confirmation, which prevents phishing attacks by showing a pop-up when you select a link, letting you confirm where it's going before you actually access it.
Email addresses can end with proton.me or protonmail.com .

04 out of 10Yahoo Mail
what we likePlenty of email storage.
Lets you create a disposable email address for free.
Includes built-in GIF database.
Using Yahoo Calendar from the email area is very simple.
Not as many filters/rules as other email providers.
The main reason I like Yahoo Mail is that every signup gets 1 TB of free storage. That's a lot more space than most email providers, so if you're looking for an email account that can store years of messages and attachments, this is a good choice.
The Compose window is similar to Gmail, but with one helpful difference: You can easily switch between inline image attachments and regular file attachments. This is important if you need to describe the context of the images, which is difficult to do when they are stored as attachments.
This is probably the best email service when it comes to alternate identities or aliases. You can create one-time addresses (up to three for free) linked to your inbox without revealing your actual address. This is helpful when you sign up for an account and don't want your regular inbox to be spammed or filled with useless emails; if there's too much spam, delete the disposable addresses.
I also really like the way Yahoo Mail is organized. All photos, documents, receipts and travel details shown in my emails are collected in their own area. Viewing these items this way is much easier than searching through their emails and opening every attachment.
Here are some other things I like about the way Yahoo emails are handled: inserting GIFs from the built-in GIF collection, using themes that change the background and color scheme of the site, importing contacts from files on your computer and other accounts such as Facebook or Facebook . Outlook, use the built-in notepad, attach files from Google Drive or Dropbox, easily attach files to recent emails sent to you, and connect external accounts so you can use one interface to manage email.
When registering, you can end your address with yahoo.com or myyahoo.com .

05 out of 10iCloud Mail
what we likeUnsubscribing from an email list is easy.
Includes 5 GB of free online storage.
Work from your computer or mobile device.
Not as advanced as some other providers.
iCloud Mail is an interesting service because many people don't realize they are just a few steps away from having it. It's free for anyone who registers an Apple ID, but it's not limited to Apple products. Anyone can get a free iCloud ID and access iCloud Mail on their computer.
After you create an account, you can log in from any computer and access a range of products in addition to Mail, such as notes, reminders, photos, iCloud Drive content, contacts, calendar events, and anything else synced from iCloud to iCloud. Your iOS device.
The email portion of iCloud isn't very advanced and may not serve you well if you want a lot of options. However, it's effortless to set up, and you don't have to go through the tedious process of adding your name and choosing a password. All of this works with your existing Apple ID or new free iCloud account.
The 5 GB of free storage for email and other iCloud files is a plus compared to some other services that offer less space. You also get IMAP support, forwarding options, support for large file attachments (up to 5 GB via Mail Drop), and the ability to unsubscribe from unwanted emails with two clicks.
The new account ends with icloud.com .
06 out of 10Tuta
what we likeAutomatically encrypt emails.
Send encrypted email to non-users.
Multiple domain options for new accounts.
A strong email password is required.
Only 1 GB of storage included.
Some features require a paid account.
Unused accounts are deleted after six months.
Tuta (formerly Tutanota) bills itself as "the world's most secure email service," and like Proton Mail, it automatically encrypts your emails. However, you can disable end-to-end encryption if you prefer.
One thing that stands out to me is that you can't create an account without creating a secure password. Some places ask you to strengthen your password, but will still accept it; Tuta requires it.
The web interface is very simple and offers menu transitions that combine mail folders and email settings. When sending messages to non-users, you can password-protect them or leave them unencrypted. If a password is specified, recipients will get a custom link to open the message; they must enter the password to read and reply.
A neat feature is that when users are not using Tuta to reply to emails, the messages are still included in the temporary account. You can communicate back and forth with any other email service, and recipients can always keep the link open.
Although not as widely known as Gmail or Yahoo, Tuta lets you have email signatures, use up to 1 GB of storage, and automatically add email recipients as new contacts. Advanced features like offline storage and smart filtering are available for a fee.
You can create an account using any of the following domains: tutanota.com, tutanota.de, tutamail.com, tuta.io, keemail.me . Paid subscribers also have the option of tuta.com .

07 out of 10Yandex Mail
what we likeFree storage for email and other Yandex services.
Allows you to sign up using your existing social media or Gmail account.
You will be reminded if the recipient does not reply after a specified number of days.
Includes a built-in translator.
Cancel the countdown for a sent email.
2FA requires a special Yandex application (most providers use Google Authenticator).
The 24-hour time format cannot be changed.
Sometimes I can't log in.
Yandex is a Russian company that offers many tools and free email accounts, such as 5 GB of online storage, a calendar, and a search engine. Like Google, your Yandex email allows you to access these services with a single login.
The interface is very friendly. It's easy to read and offers a simple layout while still keeping all the necessary tools intact. Like most other providers on this list, this provider supports email filters, contact import and export, tasks, and hotkeys.
However, it is also unique in many ways, which makes it one of the best. You can easily forward multiple messages; they are sent as file attachments. Supports delayed messages, notifies you when an email is received, and reminds you when a reply is not received. The part after @ can be your website domain name (free).
The reason I rank this lower than the others is because I occasionally have login issues. For some reason, the site thinks something fishy is going on and I'm going to be locked out until I can verify my identity. When this happens, I can go back without issue and all my emails are still there.
All addresses end with yandex.com .

08 out of 10AOL Mail
what we likeCalendar and to-do list can be easily accessed from the email page.
Select themes are available.
Spelling can be checked before each email is sent.
It's easy to accidentally open the News section instead of email.
Lots of advertising.
Some features require a paid AOL Desktop Gold subscription.
AOL Mail is another free email account option that is actually very similar to Yahoo Mail in some ways. The home page includes top news from AOL.com, which can be seen as a pleasant addition or a clutter, depending on your preference.
As with most email providers, you can filter messages to show only unread or read emails or flagged or untagged messages. AOL Mail can also block email senders and allow you to configure filters.
Much like Yahoo Mail, writing emails through the service includes access to a GIF gallery and stationery. An equally convenient photo and document collection is included here.
Your AOL.com account comes with a calendar and to-do list accessible from your inbox. However, some features, such as chat rooms, require a paid AOL Desktop Gold subscription.
The AOL email address gives you an email like example@aol.com , but if someone sends a message to example@aim.com , you can also receive the email.

09 out of 1010 minute email
what we likeGive you an address in seconds.
You do not need to create a user account to get one.
Automatically dissolves after 10 minutes.
Time limit is 10 minutes per account.
The address is too long to remember.
Only messages are accepted, so you can't reply or compose new emails.
If you need a temporary email address now without going through the typical user registration steps, 10 Minute Mail is one of the best email services out there.
As the name suggests, it is not a full-fledged email provider as it only offers you an account for 10 minutes. However, it's included here because it's perfect for situations where you need a temporary email account.
Instead of providing the main email you use for everything else, insert a disposable address for this website. You'll receive emails just like you would with a regular account, but it's not tied to your identity, and when the time comes, you don't have to worry about closing the account, deleting the emails, or anything else - exiting the page or letting the time expire.
10 Minute Mail is perfect when you're testing a service and don't want to receive emails in your regular inbox. It's also helpful when sharing your email address with someone you don't trust. This is a valid email account from which you can get verification emails and responses, but it disappears quickly.
You can use it longer if you want, but you must reset the clock using the button on the email page before the 10 minutes are up.
10 out of 10Zoho Mail
what we likeIt worked out great for the team.
Supports tabbed email windows.
Connecting to other Zoho applications is easy.
The design is clean and minimalist.
Includes unique features.
All the other interconnected Zoho applications can be overwhelming.
It is mainly centered around commercial use.
IMAP, POP, and Active Sync are not included in the free plan.
Zoho is an online suite of several applications focused on business use. Zoho Mail is its free email service.
When I first started composing an email, I noticed the minimal tabbed design, which allows me to quickly switch between my new email box and the rest of my mail. This way everything feels more accessible.
The Streams feature lets you easily create groups where you and your team members can interact with shared messages and attachments. It works a bit like a private social media site.
I also really like SecurePass. If you click the lock when creating a new email, you can set the message to automatically expire on a certain day. Additionally, when this feature is turned on, recipients will not be able to forward, copy, print, or download the email. Cool!
All standard writing tools are included, but you can also add files from Zoho Docs, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box and other services, and include tables in your messages. It also lets you create new notes and tasks, use keyboard shortcuts, enable automatic management of filters, share email drafts with contacts, set vacation replies, and send custom fields to allowed or blocked lists.
Free accounts are limited to 5 GB of storage and 25 MB of attachments, but assuming you're not a super heavy user, that's still pretty good.
All addresses end with zohomail.com.

When you choose an email account, look for a few characteristics to help you decide which account is best for you. They differ in how much storage you get, how the interface looks, how you can customize it, and what types of advanced features are included, such as messaging, filters, and the ability to import additional data.
Your actual email address may also be important to you. If your first choice doesn't give you the address you need, move on to the next one on the list. Try different combinations and variations to find ones that haven't been used yet.
If you're signing up for a new email account because you don't know your current email account, find out your email address to avoid creating an entirely new account.
